I have asked this question in another topic, but no one from India answered, and the discussion on that topic has gone to the extent to state that it looks like India consulates dont approve of such cases, which is giving me the jeebees so here goes:

My fiancee (USC) is a B-school student and can't show income at all, for previous years either. The option we are going with is taking my uncle (godfather, not really related) as a co-sponsor, he lives far off on the West Coast as compared to my fiancee who lives on East Coast. But he is a respected B-school dean and has ample income as well.

If we show him only as a sponsor would there be issues? Has anyone faced this or gone to the embassy with just a co-sponsor?

I am really getting worreid since someone has mentioned on the other topic that Indian consulates might not sanction such cases, even though we can show anybody else as a co-sponsor, because there have been cases of fraudelent co-sponsors since the I-134 is unenforcable.

It does not matter where you live in the US geographically to be a co-sponsor for someone. In your case, I would show whatever income your fiance has (work study, internship, grant etc) as the current income, whatever taxes she filed last year (or explanation of why she didn't have to file) and then have your godfather be her co-sponsor. THe co-sponsor does not have to be a relative of the petitioner -- it can be anyone.

Hope that helps. As Shalz said, shooting an email off to the embassy (and some other immigration-related forum) is always a good idea. Hopefully the person monitoring the email at the embassy will consult with an immigration officer befrore replying to your email...

Yes, I would see if immigration has anything to say about it. Or if anyone on VJ has experienced this lately

Several years ago, my cousin's wife was asked in her Delhi interivew to provide support for her visa. She had only the co-sponsor's paperwork (a blood Uncle) and the CO asked her if her husband was going to feed and clothe her or did she expect her husband's uncle to do it? She was asked to come back for a second interview, with proof of sponsorship from her husband and not just a co-sponsor. Snotty huh? Maybe things have changed over the years or the sponsorship requirements have....

Did your fiancee fill out an tax returns at all? Does she work in the school library or anything? Anything she can show for finances is probably a good idea (regardless of how little it might be).

Good Luck!!

Immigration laws/requirements/policies change.

The I-864 was not used before December 1997. It was introduced to replace the I-134 which was found to not be enforcable and therefore of limited value in determining the public charge risk. There have been many changes over the years, even in recent history. What worked for someone "a few years ago" may very well not apply today.

Wow, I didn't realize policies can change!!!

I think my point was that it did NOT work for my cousin to have only a co-sponser and to show himself as having no income and what the attidtude of the Indian Embassy was at that time.
