snow blowers don't require bending over so I prefer watching the shoveling, also it firms and tones the muscles

 next time the wifey says she's off to the gym, i'll hand her the snow shovel!

Let me see if I can do a recap here:

  • Some men like to objectify women
  • Every woman who has posted on here has objected vociferously to being objectified
  • If you're a woman who does not enjoy being objectified, you are not a real woman
  • Therefore not one of the women posting here is a real woman

Is that more or less correct? I just wanted to check before I head off to the lesbian bar.

But I am a real woman thanks to my Norwegian roots

Life is a ticket to the greatest show on earth.

 Some probably are. Why do you use such a demeaning term? I will have a foreign spouse because I could not find the right person in my very rural, isolated, and northern locale and could not find success in convincing the wonderful american women I met from elsewhere to consider moving here to further a relationship! Seriously!!

I suppose because it sounded demeaning to me for you to suggest that Jenn must have had a reason to choose her spouse over an American.

Well he suggested Jenn pony up her conceptions on what makes her Moroccan husband teh bestest opposed to the American guy she didn't choose as a spouse. ? Seriously - it's gotta be a small minority who "buys into" this dog-breed type of spouse selection. She married a guy - not a freaking breed.

/sorry Jenn :P

Now you are being ridiculous! I never asked what made Moroccans better husbands. I asked that she share the reasons, if she were willing, why her husband (one unique individual) was right for her! Dog breeds indeed!! Sheesh!!

No.

But if you aren't prepared to move to a more densely populated area then you're essentially putting huge pressure on someone you barely know to take all the risks - just so you get what you want without having to give anything up.

In his defense, I don't think he's thinking along the lines of breed. There are obvious cultural differences in the world, and I think all James is saying is that there are sometimes less desirable characteristics in a certain cultures as opposed to other ones, for him. It's merely an observation of what he desired in a wife as opposed to what his own own culture was offering. I have a hard time believing that anyone who i married to a foreign spouse hasn't noticed at least one cultural aspect of their mate that they don't see in their own culture.

You asked her to share her reasons for choosing one individual from Morocco over American men in general.

Noone has really explained what this stereotype of American women really is - other than some general guff about feminists, gender roles and "entitlement".

I contend that the stereotype doesn't exist - and is being invented on the fly by individuals merely to explain their own failures.

Where in hxxx do you get that I felt demeaned??!!!! I think it is great and I truly was curious. I am sure that as an individual he met some unfulfilled need or combination of needs in his unique way. And possibly it was due in part to the cultural differences involved. What is wrong with that?? I find it rather cool that we have the ability to expand our horizons in such a way. I am happy for her and them! Seriously!!

You are right to the extent that generalizations lose their relevance when an individual is concerned. But there are certainly some general cultural differences around the world, maybe less so between the US and UK, but even there some small differences must exist. You need to get out more!!

She said that she found what you wrote to be demeaning to Jenn.

Yes, but like the "stereotype" noone has offered any satisfactory explanation of what those cultural differences are. Indeed - they seem to vary between inviduals, which if the differences are indeed cultural (as opposed to the eye of the beholder) they should not be.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

I think we look at this just totally in a different way. I would not think of feeling demeaned by what you might have to say. I know who I am and know that as an American male I tend to have certain less than ideal qualities, some of which I am probably unaware of. But knowing how others react to me individually or as a member of a stereotypical group is a tool to use to become more self-aware. I may not agree with someone elses opinion of me or American men in general but it is helpful to know how we are perceived!

You don't have to feel demeaned in order to be demeaned. And you're right, I think we look at this in different ways. I appreciate the fact that your desire to stereotype doesn't seem to be mean-spirited, unlike some others.

I think that making the sort of generalizations that you seem to be after implies that people of a certain culture are to some extent interchangeable. If you're looking for a spouse by going through a sort of checklist as opposed to a bigger picture assessment, then if that doesn't work out you can just go back to the drawing board and go through your list again and find someone else suitable. If, for example, I said that I prefer my Moroccan husband to American men because he makes great mint tea, do you see how that implies that *any* Moroccan man who makes great mint tea would have sufficed?
