True and one of the reasons African-American women are the least likely of

all American women to get married.

40+ percent of African-American women have never been married (versus

20 percent for white women.)

I saw it as a guy, probably not too clever, married to an American woman but still checking out another American woman. Maybe he learns by repetition.

Stop saying "blacks" please.

IF you have a better term which covers the same ground, let me know (in eight letters or less).

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

There is nothing racist here. I think what has everybody upset is the stereotype of the black woman or that it was a white jogger that fell victim to the can of pepsi. Regardless its ridiculous and leaders like Shelia need to quit it with this nonsense.

That's about how I saw it. You could argue that there was stereotyping, or even sexism. I don't see the argument for racism.

It's politically incorrect, you know it's politically incorrect, so stop saying it just to give yourself a hard on.

Say "black people".

Facetious grammar aside, you'd rather say "I have a friend and he is a black"? "I have a friend, he is a brown"?

Incidentally, "brown" is (as far as I can judge) not necessarily politically incorrect in London at present, depending on usage. Regardless, this point works both ways - whether you append the color with "people" or not - and I don't disagree with what you're essentially getting at: categorising people by the pigmentation of their skin as if it were their predominant characteristic is faintly absurd, and highlighted to this extent by its descriptive inadequacy.

So I'm surprised at your eagerness to shun the politically correct zeitgeist, which really only strives to move away from this pathetically segregating terminology. "Blacks" takes an adjective and turns it into a noun on par with nationality or species. "Black people", while imperfect, is better, in that it reduces the word to a mere modifier.

I can entertain debates over whether or not "African-American" is the step-forward it purports to be, but "black people" is merely the reset button on a step backwards that should never have been taken.

It's not the term, it's how you use it.

Like saying "they".

Ah, so the word "they" is now a dirty word? Love the good speak, bad speak censorship you have going on there. Any other words I can't use? How about "is" and "there"? Is that still PC?

There's a certain N word you probably shouldn't use. Also, it's typically a good idea to stay away from the word "lazy" as well.

For an interesting twist on the whole anachronistic grammar issue, google NAACP and see what the C means. Believe it or not, the people in this organization don't like being referred to as C'd people. Yet that group is one of the largest representatives of people of that (or those, as Gary's pointed out) color(s) in the U.S.

Another good one is the UNCF. (And I'm not referring to the United Nations.)

Given the intricate grammatical semiotics at the root of this discussion, I would suggest that the possession of rudimentary comprehensive skills ought be a basic requirement for participation.

Naturally I do not think the sentence "he is black" is offensive or harmful, nor did I ever suggest it was.
