Jackson Lee blasts 'demeaning' Pepsi Super Bowl ad

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVQrH0aHGAc

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) took to the House floor Tuesday night to criticize what she called a "demeaning" Pepsi ad that aired during the Super Bowl.

In the ad for Pepsi Max, a black woman sitting on a park bench gets angry with her husband after an attractive, white female jogger sits down next to the couple and smiles and waves at the man.

After the man smiles back, his girlfriend or wife gets angry and whips her Pepsi Max can at him. The man ducks, and the can hits the attractive jogger in the head. The ad is titled "Love hurts."

Jackson Lee said it was ridiculous for the soft drink maker to air the advertisement during African-American history month.

"In this month of African-American history where we're trying to celebrate what is good and great, it certainly seems ridiculous that Pepsi would utilize this kind of humor," she said. "It was not humorous. It was demeaning — an African-American woman throwing something at an African-American male and winding up hitting a Caucasian woman."

Jackson Lee said she has a sense of humor and believes in the First Amendment. She also said the Super Bowl is a great time for "fellowship" with family members.

"That is why I'm so disappointed with the Pepsi advertisement that showed a demeaning role for African American women, in an ad that showed a can being thrown and being utilized to wound someone else or hit someone else," she said.

"I think that we can come together in a much better way, sell Pepsi, and as well talk about good nutrition," she said. "But, frankly, I consider this insulting, and so did many other women of all colors."

Jackson Lee also said it would be great to have a lot more women in ads at the Super Bowl.

I will never understand why people keep re-electing this race-card playing idiot. That's all she does: play the race card and sound like a moron while doing it.

Of course this is the same party that kept re-electing a former kkk leader over and over again as well. I suppose it's to be expected.

She took to the house floor to get attention. And she is.

First I saw this...the commercial is FUNNY!

And Pepsi ran the ad hoping for attention.. which they apparently got.

Everyone seems to be getting what they want out of this.

I didn't laugh at all.

When you live in a place where racial tension is still evident and deal with it too many times on a daily basis, it's hard to find stuff like this humorous. While I understood where Pepsi was coming from with their marketing strategy, they definitely showed poor judgement by making the jogger white. I sat there and said to myself, "Oh no they di-int!"

As much as I love seeing congress people putting our tax dollars to good use on relevant issues such as Super Bowl commercials, I have to agree with the congresswoman that Pepsi showed poor judgement. I won't go so far as to say it was demeaning and how dare they show that during Black History Month, but it was a poor choice, nonetheless.

You should move to someplace where you can laugh at funny stuff.

Difference?

Pepsi paid for the attention with money people CHOSE to spend on their product. Sheila Jackson Lee GETS paid with money confiscated from our earnings.

Race issue aside, I also didn't think it was funny because obviously the jogger was hurt. A semi-full can of soda can be a pretty dangerous weapon when hurled at someone from a meter or two by a woman scorned.

I think it's obvious, we need to ban Pepsi cans. Especially 12 packs. Who needs more than one can of no-calorie soda at once? And they sell cases of this stuff to the public with no background check, licensing or waiting period? Horrible. No wonder America is such a violent place. Society needs to take further steps to insure nutters aren't able to possess no-calorie Pepsi cans.

So it wasn't just me that felt this way about Cincinnati. My wife and I being an interracial couple, there was always this feeling that we didn't belong there. It was the major reason we only stayed in the area for a little over a year.

Yeah, but those dummies in her district keep reelecting her so you could argue too that they choose to pay her with our money.

How many other major cities have had race riots in this millenia?

OMG Slim, you really need to move. More than any man I ever met, you need to move. Do you like to watch the "Three Stooges"? the "Home Alone" series of movies? Slapstick comedy. Lighten up Slim

Next Pepsi should show another, similar commerical except with a white couple and the jogger is a black woman. Jackson-Lee's head will explode and that will be the end of that congresswoman.

I know. I heard about those but it became a lot more real when we actually lived there. Couldn't get out fast enough.

Say I were - which I'm not sure is the case - what does that have to do with anything? Are conservatives incapable of picking up bad vibes?

I don't like slapstick. Although... I do like Wipeout!

And I'm not moving away just because there are problems. America's answer to everything is to distance yourself if you can afford to. I can't get behind that. My answer is to live through it and work to resolve it. The situation in America's urban areas today isn't exactly what Dr. King envisioned when he said, "free at last." I doubt Malcolm X would be proud of the new traditions we're carrying on. Folks today have lost their way. And instead of working to make it better, we run away the first chance we get.

Are you kidding? A white couple attacking a black woman and then abandoning her on the sidewalk?

Wait till Oprah gets ahold of that one!

Otto and I may not see eye-to-eye on all things political but I'm pretty sure he's not a liberal. I'm almost completely sure I'm not one.

Yet for some reason... he and I see eye-to-eye on this issue. Perhaps it's because we've experienced it first-hand?

I know Louisville's come a long way since that young man threw his gold medal off the bridge after being refused a seat, but you have to have seen some of this while there. The 'ville isn't exactly Cincinnati, but it's similar.

I know. I heard about those but it became a lot more real when we actually lived there. Couldn't get out fast enough.

Imagine living here still.

Regardless of your politics, when you exit CVG and cross the river, your political party doesn't matter anymore. Race IDs you in this town. We have quite a bit of "reaching across the aisle" but at the end of the day.... those riots are only a shooting or two away.
