Timeline

I dont get it.

I've carefully read the terms of service and I dont see where posting a timeline is a requirement for asking a question on these forums.

I can't see anywhere where these people were given the job of policing others timelines. Is there a job description I'm missing?

Or is it a way to increase their post count?

Personally having some self appointed timeline cop telling me to fill in my timeline assures it wont ever be done....

BTW.... No I have not filled in my timeline :)

There is no requirment for filling in your timeline. But when you do your information goes into a database that others can search. It helps everyone to get an idea of the progress of the USCIS. Also, if you ask a question the answer usually depends on your circumstances. Your timeline gives the person asnwering your question the information he/she needs to help you. Plus it is just good form here on VJ to do it.

You dont have to post a timeline. And reading "post your timeline" all the time can be annoying sometimes I guess. But I don't see why you'd refuse to do so to begin with if it helps others, it doesn't take more than 5 min. It helps people you're asking help from.... I think that if you're a part of a comunity that you care about you'll do what you can to help. But anyway.... you're free to do what you want.

Just though of part of the lyrics to a song... "Can't forget you only get what you give" :star:

Don't mind the timeline police.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

what's the big deal?

A timeline takes two seconds to fill in, gives no personal info other than time, and it will also give the person filling it in an estimate of when they can expect their own approval, based on everyone else's timeline... win/win.

Now maybe I am just stupid, but I cant figure out the timeline thing for the life of me

I tried to fill it out a while ago, and ended up saying I had a CR1 visa or something?? There was no option for the type of visa I came on, and I HAD to put either K1, K3 or the CR1- but Im not any of these. And then the AOS section just confused me. So I gave up and added a signature instead! I would like to eventually figure it out though to look at similar peeps' timelines.....

Timeline Police does exist! Beware...

As some mentioned above, you don't have to fill out your timeline, but don't expect that your timeline would "HELP everyone"... Nobody needs your timeline. It is for your own good to fill one out, so when you are confused about this whole process, you can just shoot a question without having to explaining yourself, status, how far are you in the Journey, just skip it. People here are pretty smart, to some level, they can figure out where you are by looking at your timeline and be able to provide better and more relevent answer or advice specifically to your case.

So, No, by filling out your timeline, you do not help everyone but yourself.

OK, fill that timeline out already... HAHAHAHAHA  (yes, self-appointed TL Police is in the house) and no, not for post-count purpose. Just tell people to fill it out because I can :D

HAHAHAHA GOOD LUCK with your visa journey...

As if that reply made sense....

Timelines do help people who need an idea of how long things take.

How does it not help others? If someone wants to know how long it took another person from the same service center and consulate they can check ...if timelines are filled in. It helps others to find out when their case should be approved. And it helps people know what country and visa you are doing if you have a question.

Timeline

The problem I have besides listening to self appointed timeline police which I absolutly will not do... Is that in my opinion there is far to much personal information on individuals available on the internet anyway and I will not do anything to add to that.

People forget that USCIS is a law enforcemant agency, their purpose is to enforce immigration law, not to beningly process visa applications. Law enforcement loves data bases of their "clients." The timelines could be used by them a way to identify individuals.

Maybe I'm a little paranoid but I believe in my right of privacy and I wont put any information out there that might compromise my privacy.

When people ask simple questions like should they use N/A or none in filling out forms, for example, a timeline is absoultly no help in answering those types of questions...

If a question needs a bunch of personal information to be answered I'll find an immigration lawyer or someone I can trust to answer it for me on a non public forum.

If there was an option to simply add information to the timeline data annomously I would do that but I wont do it the way it is now...

I was a little paranoid too, at first.

But then, having worked for the Government for 20 years, I realized they are not capable of extrapolating your identity from the information in a timeline; and frankly why would they?

They can see everything they want, when you mail the package to USCIS.

Just don't do it then.
