Anniversaries

Today, 8/30, David and I are celebrating the 1-year anniversary of the day that he and I first met. I was on vacation in Germany and on the second night, I went to a restaurant with some friends and he was just getting ready to pay the waitress when he saw me walk in. He sent a note to my table (which was at first delivered to the wrong person, creating quite the commotion) which said, "Hello, your name is Jenifer and you're from England. I've been away for 9 years now. Care to spend 10 minutes for a chat?"

He'd overheard me speaking English... specifically with word 'castle' and thought I was from the north of England. He misspelled my name but I decided that he was very intriguing and that meeting him was worth the 'risk'. I left my group and went to his table where he was sitting alone and told him that he was half right... that my name WAS Jennifer, but that I was American, and not British. He said, "Well, sit down anyway." 10 minutes turned into three hours, and the rest you can read in my profile.

We have another anniversary... the 24 hours we spent together when he surprised me by coming to the town where I was to spend my last 48 hours while I was on vacation. And another, when we resumed our relationship on his birthday. Of course, there's the anniversary of our telephone 'engagement', and the one in person...

So are we overly sentimental and reminiscent, or do others remember and celebrate similar relationship milestones?

Jen

A great marriage is not when the "perfect couple" comes together.

It is when an imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences.

Aww that's such a sweet story!

We celebrate 4.. date we got together online (Jan 23rd), first time we met in person (April 5th), the date we got engaged (9th December) and our anniversary (May 20th). All but the anniversary are more of an acknowledgement than a celebration. Although Dave reminds me 20th of every month how long we've been married and insists on an anniversary meal lol.

10 year Green Card received, Next step is citizenship urgh!

Just the two basics for us, the day we first met in real life (and 'officially' started dating- June 26), and the day he proposed (July 19).

Down the line, there will be our first wedding and second wedding, which could make one or two new dates depending when our visa is approved. Our courthouse wedding we're trying to make one of three dates: March 17 (St Patricks Day), or one of the two days above. If we do March 17 for the first date, we're going to try for the big fancy shmancy 2nd wedding to be one of those other two dates.

Harry and I celebrate the anniversary of the day we admitted our feelings for each other: November 14th. And the official day we got together: January 1st. But we don't 'celebrate' them stereotypically. We don't go out or do anything special, it's just a nice remider to each other how far things have gone. And we do six-month and such as well. Just little reminders. Hey we've been together x-long, isn't that neat? o.O heh.

We do that too!

Yes, it's probably a little cheesy, but who cares?

It's another "excuse" to have dinner out and spend a lovely night! (L)

We celebrate 3 "monthversaries" every month, on the 4th (the day we got together over 6 years ago), the 16th (the day of our first wedding) and the 24th (our second wedding).

Nothing huge, we usually just eat out at our favorite restaurant or have a candle light dinner at home, and go see a movie if there's something decent to watch. :D

Sadly we don't remember the actual day we met(on aol IM), just the month. :( I had no idea I'd be falling in love with and marrying him one day when we met online, so I didn't make a mental note. :P By the time I wanted to know the date, I couldn't remember the exact day. He couldn't either.

We celebrate our wedding anniversary just once a year, last year we celebrated Sujeet being in the US for 1 year (almost 2 years now in 3 days!). That's all we have celebrated. We may mention for other things like "hey this is the day I went to India to meet you", "hey this is the day we got engaged", but we don't spend money for those things.

Generally we only celebrate our wedding anniversary, although as you can see from my timeline I know the exact day we met! However this is only because I was able to construct it from flight records, as I flew from Madrid to California that day, arriving at 7pm and very jetlagged, I for some reason decided not to go home and get the sleep I needed, but to go meet up with some friends down the pub. It was then I met my lovely wife, who was only visiting town for the day. To think how different* my life would be today if I had just gone to bed like I should have!

*It would have been worse!

We have for the longest time celebrated our first date anniversary (October 1, 2002). On the first of each month, we say Happy Anniversary to each other. Now that we are married, we have a new anniversary-August 16, 2006. I think we'll probably say Happy Anniversary to each other on the first and the 16th of each month, for a while, until we have the big wedding which we picked for April 7, 2007. That's the anniversary I think we both eventually want to celebrate, and once we have passed that date, we'll probably just do an annual celebration of our "legal" anniversary and our "sentimental" anniversary-but hopefully it can eventually be a real celebration, rather than us just saying "Happy Anniversary" to each other.

David and I have reminisced about all of the 'what ifs' today... he'd been painting his old flat and moving into his house the day he went to that restaurant. Hot and sweaty all day.

what if he had decided he was too tired to go out?

what if he had chosen a different restaurant?

what if he'd left before I arrived?

what if I'd gone to the restaurant we had originally planned to go to?

what if I'd just raised my glass and not taken him up on his offer of English conversation?

what if he'd never sent that note?

what if the weather had been bad (like it was there today) and we'd eaten indoors in separate parts of the restaurant?

... and tons of others throughout the months that followed.

So many things had to fall in line for things to happen the way that they did, but I suppose that's true for everything in life. I don't believe in luck, fate, or coincidence. This was the way it was supposed to be. David had dinner there tonight and took pics with his cell phone. My sentimental honey. (L)

We met online on May21st (my birthday). We were in a place where we used to go all the time to share files (songs, pics etc) about Guns N' Roses, our favorite band. I wanted a song and I asked on the main chat if anyone had it. He messaged me and we started talking.... he ended up never sending me the song. :P From that first talk, that lasted a few hours, I knew I liked him a lot so I gave him my email address. He emailed me a few days after that saying he wanted to meet again and that it was the first time he had connected with someone that way. So I emailed him back and the rest is history. :luv:

It scares me to think that I wouldn't be with him right now if:

* I hadn't asked that question in English

* He hadn't just bought a dvd that had the video of the song I wanted

* My mom hadn't "made" me love GN'R

* I hadn't given him my email address

* I was in a bad mood and hadn't allowed private messages that day

* His email had been sent to my bulk folder and I hadn't checked it

So many possibilities.... I'm glad everything happened the way it did though!

Anyway.... the first year we were together we celebrated the 21st of every month. Now we celebrate our May21st anniversary every year, which is, so far, our main anniversary. And we have other important dates like the first day we met in person, Sep 9th; and the day he named a star after me as a way of officially asking me to marry him, July 4th.

The two years we spend those dates together we usually went out and did something special or stayed home and had a special night or something. Always with a gift... most of the time a sentimental gift rather than a material one.

And this year, since we were apart, he got me one of my favorite movies and we watched it together using the webcam. :luv:

We celebrate August 27th as our anniversary. It's the first day we saw each other after 3 years and also the first time we kissed. Our one year anniversary we were in Spokane, Washington, doing a 4 month cross country camping trip, and that night we celebrated by staying at a Motel 6 and going to Olive Garden for dinner. (that was upscale, considering we'd been staying in a tent for 2 months already!) Mike said on our next anniversary we would go to a Motel 7...ha-ha-ha. Although, our 2nd anniversary jsut passed and all we got was a phone call from each other, as he's back in England and I am here in the US. Our wedding date is set for August 25th, next year, so it will be 2 days away from our 3 year anniversary. He's coming out for a visit next week, so we'll celebrate our 2 years then. CAN'T WAIT!!!
