Being a bit bored today I was thinking about clothing for an event 2 years off. We are talking about a week long thing. The typical Nigerian event, we will be dressed as a couple , as a family group and so on. I am looking for sources of cloth, jewelry and headgear. I know we will get some of this in country but looking at the fabrics and all is always so nice I thought I would throw it out here. Feel free to add pictures of yourselves. Show off what you have.

The clothing in the US for African styles and fabrics is so expensive. I had 3 dresses made while in Nigeria, but I gained a little weight so they don't feel very comfortable. I am the USC and haven't yet learned the headwear either. I would like to know where I could buy just the fabric, inexpensive.

You can buy the same material and sew for a couple. If you know someone in Nigeria, have them buy, send them your measurement, and chose a style, they'll sew and mail to you. My wife buys all our materials, she already has my measurement, so she gives to a fashion designer who sews for her and me. I cannot count how many we have now.

Also, you know the style of clothes and jewelries the couple wears for the occasion depends on the culture of the couples. If you an American, the traditional wear would automatically depend on your SO's tribal wears.

The best thing to do would be to send someone you trust some funds to go and buy you some cloths, then send them your measurements and have them send you the finished cloths. Now -a-days; they make them fitting to your size so if you want them fitting, or loose it's your choice, your African spouse can help you being that he has the connections in Africa if your not comfortable asking them. Your spouse has many relatives there. Maybe he can ask one of his relatives for you.

Check out my wedding video below to see the outfit.

I bought my fabric here in NY. There is a large Nigerian community in Staten Island, N.Y. and Seyi's friends that live there took me to this woman for the fabric. She had a huge selection to choose from. Then I went to a seamstress - also in Staten Island - and she took my measurements and Seyi called her with his measurements and she sewed both outfits. I took them along with me to Nigeria for our wedding. It wasn't cheap but after the hideous fabric and dress pattern that my husbands's sister selected for us for the engagement party, I felt that I needed to have the control for our wedding, so I took care of selecting our outfits here in the States..

I also had the blue on blue for our wedding, Joseph brought them from Nigeria. I have a collection of geles that are fun, there is a woman that is quite good locally and I can also tie my own reasonably well. Just looking for ideas as we have a major even in the future so planning ahead is always best especially with the cost of fabrics. He needs some of the 3 piece outfits and I can always use more.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

where do you live? if you're in a city with a large nigerian community, the best thing to do would be to go to the shops and pick something out. if you trust the taste of your in laws, you can ask them to pick something out for you, too. if you live in NYC, there are a ton of places in the herald sqaure area. if you live in houston, that's little nigeria, so you shouldn't have a problem finding something somewhere. same story with the DMV.
