Hello all,

I am a new member and this site is extremely useful. Let me introduce my problem to you all. May be someone here will help me.

I got married this Nov 2010 in canada. My wife is from india and she never visited USA. I am US citizen and currently filed for her immigration. At this time, I am filing for my 2010 taxes. I have two options on my tax form: ie to file jointly or separately. She works in india and has no USA income and has no USA identification number. The 1040 tax form is asking me to put her identification number and/or income etc. I am totally confused. I have so many questions but willing to wait for a while. I need to get info from you all. Please suggest me - thanks

if your married you file your taxes as married,if you got married in 2010 even if she is in another country, you need to get a itin number form w-7 for assistance call 1-800-908-9982 us treasury internal revenue service, austin tex 73301-0057 address p/o box 149342 austin tx 78714-9342 thats the department that you need, you call ask for w-7 you have to send it to you your wife to sign it and a copy of her passport, the form will tell you what to do , its better to file jointy for a better refund, and good for evidence to show married file joint,if you don't get the form in time to file ask for extension to file your taxes, april 18,

This post lays out the options well.

You may be able to get an ITIN number as described above. If no ITIN number for your wife, the only option is to file married filing separately, and put "NR" (non-resident) for her SSN.

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!

Thankyou all.

Harpa Timsah the link is useful. I was freaking out. I may go for married and filing separately. This way my wife do not have to file her income etc. Hopefully this will not come back to bite me.
