Probably not, but you still need to give people an opportunity to move up so that they can personally chose to succeed or fail.

Why do we need to "give" opportunity? Isn't opportunity, by it's very nature, created by individuals who take the initiative to act on it?

I'm a firm believer in equality and fairness. However, I don't think we need to create artificial opportunities for folks in the name of fairness. Life is not fair. However, here in the U.S., we all have the same opportunities.

Otherwise you saw what happened in Tunisia and Egypt, right?

What, the government cut off their student loans?

Yes there are people who scam the system, however people for the most part do not expect handouts or charity. They look for opportunities to better themselves. And you can't punish them just because there are a few who take advantage of the system.

The most part?

And when you say "punish them" by stopping handouts, what are you really saying there?

And never get a personal loan from a bank for school. I did that and it is the biggest mistake I have ever made.

Why was it a big mistake? Because you couldn't just write it off and have other working Americans pay it for you?

I paid all my own tuition but went to a public university which is funded partially by the tax revenues.....

So, in other words, tax payers paid for your education?

I paid tuition and attended a state university, so yes, my college education as well as my elementary and high school education was paid for through taxes.

College graduates are taxpayers - according to the census bureau earn $51k on average vs $28k those who only graduated from high school and therefore pay far more taxes throughout their lives than someone who did not.

So I'm not sure who is earning an "entitlement"

Omg I am such a moocher and didn't even know it. Damn you state university!

Why is it someone else's job to pay for your education?

Who paid for your education? I hope they kept the receipt.

I already posted, I did not go to college.

You said before you paid for it all yourself. Now, which is it? You paid or taxes paid?

College graduates are taxpayers - according to the census bureau earn $51k on average vs $28k those who only graduated from high school and therefore pay far more taxes throughout their lives than someone who did not.

Does "far more" equate to even money for everyone who takes on tax dollars? I'm no tax expert, but I'm pretty sure those who make $51k on average only pay slightly higher taxes than those who make $28k. They may pay a few grand more every year but does that go directly back to paying for their schooling?

So I'm not sure who is earning an "entitlement"

It's really hard to earn an entitlement since entitlements are given away and typically paid for with other peoples' money.

Over the years that is a significant amount more.

Higher earnings also mean higher consumption and bigger houses (property tax being key to funding education in many parts of the country).

So yes - it does.

Who is this "other person's money" you keep referring to - is it yours?

It could be mine.

I think it is much like how The Man tries to keep him down too.

The Man has nothing to do with me, he's too busy with people of color.

BTW, how's the trial prep going on your test case slim?

Which case are you referring to?

So yes - it does.

So the govt. earmarks that money to pay back schools?

You intimated in another thread that you were looking into taking your case to court as a sort of test case regarding your forefiture of your 2nd amendment rights.

Did you go to a public school, Slim? Have you seen a doctor lately? Needed a lawyer or accountant? Did an engineer design a bridge you drove over recently or did you design and build it yourself?

So in addition to him being a paroled criminal, costing us good citizens our hard earned money, he is sucking up other resources too?

Which is exactly why I'm against folks using my money for their education. It's mine.

How is a tax deduction I receive, "your" money? A tax deduction allows ME to keep more of the money I worked for. It doesn't take anything from you or anyone else. Educated people are far less likely to end up on welfare, generally make more money in the future (and pay more income tax) Tax deductions for education are probably the most logical and sensible of all tax deductions. The majority of them are just ways to manipulate people. Education actually has a tangible return to society.

We need to eliminate income tax of all sorts completely, then there would be none of this nonsense, Replace it with the FAIR TAX and job done. No income tax, no income tax deductions.

Until then I am in favor of any and every tax deduction for any and every reason.

I would actually like to see our country provide free* education through a bachelors degree (at least) and require that students graduate high school (at least) The idea of allowing 16 year olds to drop out of education is just stupid! Who thinks of that sh*t?

*by "free" I mean using government funds generated by taxes.

I didn't go to college. When I use the services of someone who has a college education I compensate them for it. I don't expect them to seek money from the government on my behalf, much in the same way I wouldn't expect the government to pay for their education. If they want an education they should pay for it.

Not my case, a case.

So in addition to him being a paroled criminal, costing us good citizens our hard earned money, he is sucking up other resources too?

Who is a paroled criminal? And how do paroled criminals in Ohio cost you money in California? What other resources am I sucking up?

How is a tax deduction I receive, "your" money?

The same way Rob's money in California is paying for me to suck up resources here in Ohio. If I'm not paying for them, someone is. You are. Rob is.

When someone doesn't pay for their own education, someone else has to pay for it. If you pay taxes, you're paying for someone's education.
