OK, that's fair. Although I would suggest to you that most people who analyze the cost benefit of going to college don't build in the assumption that they will stay where they are. Moving to where your new skills can be put to better use is generally part of the calculation.

As I said, going to college wouldn't help ME earn more money. I'm not leaving.

Most people who go to college also consider which field they'll be working in too. Like leaving their homes, they don't mind sacrificing their dreams in order to pursue more $$$$.

If the government is going to force me to exercise my "right" to health care, then they better start requiring people to exercise their Right to Bear Arms. - "Where's my public option rifle?"

Oh yeah, that's the spirit that built America! :jest:

No, that's the, "I'm not selling out for $12,000 more each year." attitude.

Keep in mind, I'm also not the guy that moves out of my neighborhood because there's crime there now or people who are a different color than me. I don't need to constantly "move up" like most Americans. To me, moving up means being comfortable where I am, not moving to a bigger house farther away from people every couple of years.

So if you could do it, why can't everyone?

I was educated at a public university and tax deductions were utilized to help pay for it. Why would you have a problem with someone getting a tax deduction to help pay for school like the OP did? That's not "your" money - that was money earned by the OP

If you paid in-state tuition, you did go to college (in part) on "others money". Not that I have a problem with that.

People in my hometown had to move away because all the manufacturing jobs went away. I'd say someone else sacrificed their dreams for them. Those that went to college simply had more options.

So only some people should get deductions?

Uh oh! There went that argument.

My husband has a rag-to-riches story because he went to college and earned a degree. He has more than payed back into the system for all the subsized federal loans, state grants and not to forget the free school lunch and food stamps he had to live on as a kid. He pays more in taxes now than he would have been able to if he hadn't gone to college. You should try seeing it more as "investing in my fellow citizen and country" rather than "wasting my tax dollars".

I don't necessarily see it as either. I see it as another entitlement program that government has no business doing. If folks want to borrow money to go to school, borrow it from a bank.

Maybe you should try to look at it from the perspective of, "Is my husband's case the norm or the exception? Does every kid on free lunch and food stamps grow up to live in a high tax bracket?"

Probably not, but you still need to give people an opportunity to move up so that they can personally chose to succeed or fail. Otherwise you saw what happened in Tunisia and Egypt, right? Yes there are people who scam the system, however people for the most part do not expect handouts or charity. They look for opportunities to better themselves. And you can't punish them just because there are a few who take advantage of the system.

And never get a personal loan from a bank for school. I did that and it is the biggest mistake I have ever made.

The deduction is available to you too, you know. Whether you choose to take it is up to you. I don't have kids but I don't whine about people who are able to claim them as dependents. It's not "my" tax money - it's their earnings.

What argument was I making? I paid all my own tuition but went to a public university which is funded partially by the tax revenues.....because of higher earnings as a result of having an education I have paid back through higher taxes.

That is teh socialism.

the socialism that ensures the nation has enough doctors, nurses, teachers, scientists, etc
