Hi, just have a small question about naturalization.

I was told that one would be eligible after 4 years and 9 months, and can send in the completed forms at that time, is that correct?

If so, would the process start at that time, or one would still need to wait until the 5 year mark?

Thanks very much!

4yrs 9 months is correct, but when u sent the form, the application starts when they receive it. The process start on the RECEIPT date which they will send after a month or so. Doesnt have to wait until 5 years, because the application itself duration is already 6 months - 1 year. Until your interview, your timeline is already reached 5 years mark.

Well,

USCIS allows you to mail your N400 application for naturalization 90 days before your 5 year anniversary. If you are called for an interview before your 5 year anniversary, USCIS may delay your oath until after the 5 year annivesary. If your interview is after your 5 year anniversary, then you are well and good and in some places you may even take the oath the same day you pass your interview.

And the N400 application timeline depends on your location and many other factors, so depending where and when you file, you may be called for an interview anywhere from 3 months to whenever. A friend of mine in Atlanta filed in Sept 2009 and was a citizen in Dec 2009.
