Hello -

My friend is starting the process of applying for his citizenship, however he did not register for the selective service before age 26. He came to the US on a petition filed by his parents. Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks.

He will need to find out if he was registered automatically. He needs to have been registered to be able to get citizenship if he was in the US before the age of 26. If he came after he aged out then he would be fine.

He should first check out if he was automatically registered through https://www.sss.gov/RegVer/wfVerification.aspx

How old is he now? Failure to register does not mean automatic denial of citizenship.

HMMMM well he's shooting his self in the foot - when HE was processed in kingstion, jamaica and if he was under 26 he would have been required to sign off off on a piece of paper TELLING him to register for the selective service. Keep in mind even if he wasnt advised of this requirement at the embassy this information is included in the green card packet that is received. If it was not included then as a LPR he has to find out his responsibility as a GC holder.

Fix...

He should send a letter with the application explaining why he did not register when required then he will be considered. Again as noted above if he was 27 or elder then registration isn't required..

Or wait 5 years to show good moral character.

The Welsh Dragon - I haven't seen that on here very often! My great-grandfather immigrated here from Wales when he was a child.

Question on your 5 years post - wait an additional five years or is the 5 years already passed because he has been here for 6.

6 Nations tomorrow.

26 plus 5 years good behavior, assuming he was not registered.

Okay dont worry yet. If you did a lookup at https://www.sss.gov/RegVer/wfVerification.aspx and it returned no results, the reason is probably because they dont have your social security number

to reference it to your SSS number.

Give them a call on 1-888-655-1825 and have a representative search their database for your SSS number (NOTE for many INS automatically registered you),

Give the representative the city and state you lived in when you applied for LPR and your last name and in most cases you will find you were registered by INS. You can then give them your social security number to add to their records which will then allow you to look it up on the site. They will also mail you a postcard as proof.

As suggested by numerous posters, your friend will be best served calling selective service. He may have been registered by (INS) now known as uscis. Sice he came in as a permanent resident, there was no way around registering. Primarily, those on Visitors and students visas are exempt from registering. Still call selective service to find out for sure what his/her status is and what to do next.

Registering for selective service is a bad joke in my opinion, done during the Reagan administration as an afterthought. They know where every kid is at, but the USCIS takes that very seriously, and even for a five year, have to fill that number in with your selective service number. Selective service wasn't even used in Iraq when Bush started that war. Enlistments were way down and succumbing to political pressure, hired mercenaries instead to do his dirty work. But not dealing with Bush, but with the USCIS on this issue.

My stepkid did get a notice from the USCIS when she first got her greencard, but was exempt since she is a female, didn't your friend get that notice as well? Only takes a couple of minutes on the web.

Heck, try registering now, see what happens, have to admit, the USCIS is very lax in helping new immigrants.
