honeymoon question

Am I right in that once my fiance enters the US on the K-1 visa and we get married, he can't leave the US until he has his green card? Kind of narrows down the honeymoon destination...however, we're going to Hawaii, so I'm not complaining. Just want to confirm that he can't leave. How soon can he work once he enters the country (assuming he can find a job)? I was under the impression that once he enters he can look for a job and work, legally. Don't they stamp him with the EAD, or something like that? He is currently working for an American company in the UK and ideally, it'd be great if they would just transfer him, but since there are no guarantees of that, we have applid for the K-1.

Anyway, just a few questions...I hope someone can answer them.

THe only airport which used to give out temporary EAD's was JFK but for some reason these seem to be very few and far between these days. On a K1 you cannot work until you receive EAD (Employment authorization document) which you can apply for along with AOS (adjustment of status). If you have not received EAD more than 90 days after application you can schedule an Infopass appointment and ask for a temporary one - I believe.

Yep, its expensive and a pain in the #######, but it must be endured. The government says so.

We're getting married on a Saturday and leaving for our honeymoon on the next Wednesday (4 days later). Is the AOS paperwork something we can start before the wedding so that we can get it mailed off before we leave for the honeymoon? Or is it something we'll have to start when we get back?

You can complete as much as possible beforehand, but will have to await your marriage certificate as this needs to be amongst the evidence included in the package you send for AOS.

Mine was approved quickly and took not far off the full 90 days.

Unfortunately one thing this imigration process teaches is patience - nothing ever happens quickly or cheaply!

Yeh, if it's one thing I don't have, it's patience! My fiance is always giving me a hard time about it, 'cos he is so much more patient than I am.
