Dang!!!...that is it? I guess with the turmoil in Egypt it may not happened if they closed the US embassy. I hope that they will keep it open and the Egyptian government will settled their differences. We have to wait and see and go from there. :(

Don't worry about it, for now. Your petition is with USCIS in the US now, and it won't be sent to the embassy until it's been approved, which will be months from now.

How long is the wait? and if it is approved where do they send the paperwork with Egypt a messed right now. Will they hold it until the chaos ends and a new government is established? What if (worst scenario if the radicals takes over will our US Embassy close for that reason)? i am so afraid of the unknown knowing that i might never see him again. I am in contact with him everyday and he made a comment saying he is afraid of the future of Egypt and what tomorrow will bring to their people. Thank you so much for the reassurance guys I appreciate it alot.

It's taking about 5 months. (Give or take a little) After that time if it's approved, they will send it to the US Embassy in Egypt then.

You're going to have to be a little patient cause stressing yourself out about "what ifs" is going to make you ill! Don't worry, it'll all work out! You've got plenty of time before papers are even sent to Egypt. Hang in there! :)

The visa process, start to finish, almost exclusively involves the US government - not the Egyptian government. The only exception is that there are some documents he'll need to obtain from the Egyptian government, like birth certificate, police certificate, passport, etc. When things settle down in Egypt then the US Embassy will reopen. If there's a new government in place then the US Embassy will probably remain as the diplomatic guest of the new government, but nothing will change in the visa process.

There is a possibility that a new government in Egypt might not be friendly to the US. If that happens then the US might be forced to close the embassy. This is what happened in Iran in 1979, and in Cuba in 1961. In that event, consular duties would be shifted to another US Embassy in the region, or to an in-country embassy of a country which is friendly to the US. In the case of Iran, they shifted consular duties to the US Embassy in Turkey. In the case of Cuba, consular duties were initially shifted to the Swiss Embassy, and a US Interests Section staffed by Americans was installed in 1977.

Ah, well, your case is a bit different because the events are unfolding while your case is at the consulate. This sort of thing doesn't happen very often, and the Department of State has to respond as the situation changes. We can look at historical situations to see how these things eventually work out in the long run, but in the short term things will be very dynamic. I'm presuming all of this stuff will probably be settled by the time the OP's petition is approved.

It appears unlikely that the US will not have diplomatic relations with the interim military government, or the planned future elected government. This presumes that there are actually elections at some point, and a civilian government takes power. Military coups, even bloodless ones, don't always end as promised. However, if diplomatic relations were suspended for some reason then the US Embassy in Cairo would likely not reopen for consular operations. This is what happened in Tehran in 1979 and Havana in 1961. In fact, many of the Embassy staff in Tehran were held captive for more than a year by the Islamic revolutionaries.

At this point, there's not much you can do except sit back, watch, and wait. Check out the Embassy website every day for news.

Dahlia,

I know exactly how you feel, luckily you still have some time to wait before your petition is even sent to Egypt. My SO is from Comoros but is a resident in Egypt and we lived there together for the past 1.5 years. I had to leave because of everything and coming up on the fourth month of waiting, I am terrified about what will happen, if anything due to whats going on there. My SO doesn't want to be in the country anymore and currently the US Embassy is closed and only doing US citizen services and not processing visas. I do hope everything is sorted out and the embassy there begins to function again, even so I am worried because the backlog is going to be bad and trying to get an interview is going to be even worse.

From one worried person to another, I feel your pain.
