Hi,

I applied for naturalization based on marriage. And will have an interview soon. I have been unemployed for more than a year and have been receiving my unemployment benefits. I am worried if it will effect negatively my naturalization. Do they really see that I am receiving benefits or do they ask where do I work now?

Nope.

Unemployment Benefits is NOT Welfare, Unemployment is not a means tested benefit, it is an insurance program paid by you and your former employer.

This will not be held against your sponsor either.

Nobody knows for sure what they see when they search federal databases and nobody knows for sure what they will ask you. Important for you is that none of this has the slightest influence for naturalization purposes. Being unemployed is not illegal in the US of A and it's not a sign of lacking good moral character also.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . .
