Ok I have a question. Please don't get mad I am just curious about some things in Islam that I have read about and heard about so here is my question:

The Quran states that a man can only marry 4 women (correct me if I'm wrong).

The Prophet Muhammed is sinless, yes?

Now I have read and heard that Muhammed had 12 wives.

So my question is: Is Muhammed above the law he gave in the Quran and isn't the definition of sin violating the law of God?

Does that make sense?

I'm just curious because from what I know and have heard which is not much I thought that men could only have 4 wives so I was curious about Muhammed.

Thanks!

Sarah

Thanks for your interest in asking about our holy prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him and his family).

You are right that Quran says a muslim man can have upto 4 wives but if and only if he could do justice among them and that includes fulfilling all their needs.

You are also right when you say a prophet is sinless, yes because all prophets(peace be upon them) are chosen human beings from Allah the all Mighty starting from Adam to the last prophet Mohammad(peace be upon both of them).

Also you are not the first person who has made this argument about the prophet having more wives then it is priscribedin the quran.

Its is believed of him to have 9 wives at one time and all of these marriges he had were done for a reason and with the permission from the almighty as a prophet is also not the one who will do anything against Allah's will.

The ruling you are asking about in the quran of 4 wives has came way after he had these wives and also Quran was revealed to him in 23 yrs so the different rules came at different times.

The Holy prophet has said himself that he is also a hauman being and all the laws of Allah apply to him the same way it applies to any other human being.

May Allah increase your interest in Isalm the ture religon of Allah and guide us all to the straight path. Ameen

Quite simply, God gave the Prophet (saws) special dispensation to not divorce his wives down to 4 when this verse was revealed.

Logically, we can approach it like this. The wives of the Prophet (may the mercy of God be upon them) are known as the Mothers of the Believers. Since it is forbidden to marry our mothers, if the Prophet's (saws) wives were divorced, they would not be able to marry again. Also, each of the Prophet's marriages played an important role in the early community, and in the continuation of Islam after the Prophet's death. We get a large number of our hadith traditions passed down to us through the Prophet's wives. Many of the marriages cemented political ties, and if he had divorced them, it would have shattered the early community.

Reasons for the Prophet's various marriages

I have to de a little research, but I believe the Prophet ( peace be upon him) never had more the 4 wives at one time.

Each marriage had it's significance in either teaching a lesson to us or joining a families together.

His first wife Khadija ( peace be upon him) was his only wife for 25 years and only after her death did he marry again.

I was kind of hoping for answers from you guys and not from websites...

I'm more interested in what you guys have to say about it from what you know and have learned.

Anyone can find a website, I'm sure I could find several saying why it is wrong...

So from you guys?

I don't know how much more in depth I can go other than what I already stated  The Prophet (saws) was exempt from the ruling in that verse because his wives were not ordinary wives and his marriages were not ordinary marriages.

Also, as a shafi'i leaning muslim, Sunnipath is a vital source of information for me. I take classes through the site from world class scholars, submit questions to scholars and search their answers bank for guidance. It isn't just a website that puts articles up online. They seek to mirror traditional islamic learning in an online setting for those of us who don't live in a real world community with ready access to scholars.

When answering any question in Islam, you have to answer it from a trusted source. There is no "in your opinion" because you can lead people astray there. Becarful which site you learn from because not all are legit.

I agree with you and appreciate your answer. Whenever people just post websites, I tend to not even look at them. These days there are websites about anything and everything and who knows who wrote it or who that person is and why should someone take what they say to be truthful?

I do not use the sites that are posted.

Thank you for doing research and not just posting quickly with little thought or knowledge I appreciate that.

Rahma said that his marriages were not normal they were different etc. Since marriage is a holy union it seems like Muhammed shouldn't have been marrying women for "political" reasons. What were those reasons?

Is it true that most people in the Middle East are Muslim because they were forced to convert long long ago? I heard that if you wanted to remain Christian you were required to pay a fee?

Not true.. if you take a world religions class you'd be surprised to find out that Islam spread very quickly throughout the middle east and some surrounding countries, without force.

During what time are you talking about? I'm talking more about ancient times.

I learned in a history class I took that many Christian families were forced to convert to Islam in ancient times which is why even today there are many Arab families in the Middle East who have Christian last names but who are Muslim.

isn't it against islam to force people to convert??

the way i learned it is that it spread very quickly without force also....

Can I ask where or from who you guys learned this?

Here's the way I see it: In just about any situation where you are learning from someoene who feels very passionate about their beliefs, they are probably not going to tell you the more negative aspects of what they are teaching. I am not saying this happens only in Islam, but in anything! If someone wants you to play soccer real bad, they're not going to tell you about how you could get kicked or fall down and break your neck.
