Taxes Question - sorry if already been asked before.

Hello All!

Been a while since I have posted here, but I have some questions.

I apologize in advance if they have been asked before, I just didn't see answers when I was searching.

Canadian Taxes 2010:

I worked in Canada and had income and a T4.

Do I just file normally in Canada as I would if I was living there?

USA Taxes 2010:

I did NOT have any income in the USA, do I still have to file?

Does my husband file me as a dependant?

I do NOT have a SSN yet, does that make any difference on anything?

ANY insight or help on the taxes situation would be helpful, tried to ask the lady that normally does hubby's taxes, but she had no information that was relevant or helpful... sigh.

USA Taxes 2010:

I did NOT have any income in the USA, do I still have to file? As a married couple you may either file separately or file jointly, even if you did not make any income.

Does my husband file me as a dependant? You will be listed as his spouse, not his dependent (which usually refers to children or other relatives living with you that rely on him for support)

I do NOT have a SSN yet, does that make any difference on anything? If you don't have an SSN, and your husband would like to list you as his spouse on a joint return, then you have to complete an application for an ITIN (IRS form W-7 with supporting documents), and prepare a statement saying you wish to be treated as a resident alien for tax purposes (the format of the letter can be found on the IRS website).

Better chances of getting a higher tax refund if you file jointly.

Just to add, the application for the ITIN has to be attached to your husband's joint return (you can't apply for an ITIN in advance)...so this means you guys will not be able to e-file...the return + the ITIN application will have to be mailed at the same time. It'll take the IRS a few days longer to process it, but it will pay off.
