Heatwave set to hit the city

CAMPBELLTOWN residents will continue to swelter with the rest of Sydney this week as the city faces a record heatwave.

Weatherzone.com.au meteorologist Josh Fisher said temperatures were expected to reach 38 degrees in the west today.

The mercury rose to 39 degrees on Monday and 40 degrees yesterday.

Mr Fisher said the higher-than-average temperatures were caused by a hot air mass that had been building inland for two weeks and was now pushing east.

Temperatures were expected to stay above 30 degrees for the next five days, which could make it the hottest week on record.

"The heat is expected to linger throughout the week and we can expect temperatures to stay up in the high thirties right until Sunday.

"Although a very weak change is expected [early today] that will lead to increased humidity.

"There should be a stronger change on Sunday that will get temperatures back to just above average."

With hot weather forecast across much of the state in coming days, police warned people against leaving children in hot cars, even if it was only for a few minutes.

The NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) has urged people to check their bushfire survival plans.

RFS commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said a total fire ban was put in place across Sydney yesterday.

He encouraged Macarthur residents to exercise commonsense. "The recent rain has caused an abundance of fuel and it can take only a few days of hot, dry and windy weather for the conditions to change, so we don't want people to become complacent," he said.

Sounds like summer in Australia.
