So unconstitutional that he couldn't get himself to stop its implementation?

Why would he care if it is constitutional?

If I recall correctly, when Obamacare "passed" and was signed into law there were multiple threads here from liberals all gushing about the news

Now it is ruled unconstitutional and they all disappear. Strange.

I wonder then if the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1986 is constitutional then. Part of its mandate was that hospitals must treat anyone in an emergency regardless if they could pay, were citizens, or had insurance. The government clearly shifted healthcare from a standard consumer good to a public service at that point. So if healthcare isn't a right and its just another business how can the government force it to take customers who don't pay?

A fair question. How many folks that would not have lived, if the law had not passed, had to live their remaining days, hounded by the hospital that saved their lives? I know of at least one.

My brother used to work in collections for a major public hospital in Michigan.

The proportion of unpaid bills that were not pursued was pretty significant - they generally did not touch anything less than $100k

These days, it doesn't take too much for an ER visit to exceed that, especially if there is no insurance company to enforce contract rates.

A major hospital in Seattle pursued me for a couple hundred dollars.

The ER is different because your expected to pay every last penny or your credit could be in jeopardy. That on top of the extremely high prices people who are financially responsible avoid the ER like the plague. I often thought the prices are so high because they trying to compensate for the people who cant pay their bills. A air life ride for about 20 miles cost close to 12,000 dollars in central Oregon. Talk about kicking a man while he is down.
