Muslim Brotherhood: ‘Prepare Egyptians for war with Israel'

A leading member of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt told the Arabic-language Iranian news network Al-Alam on Monday that he would like to see the Egyptian people prepare for war against Israel, according to the Hebrew-language business newspaper Calcalist.

Muhammad Ghannem reportedly told Al- Alam that the Suez Canal should be closed immediately, and that the flow of gas from Egypt to Israel should cease “in order to bring about the downfall of the Mubarak regime.” He added that “the people should be prepared for war against Israel,” saying the world should understand that “the Egyptian people are prepared for anything to get rid of this regime.”

Ghannem praised Egyptian soldiers deployed by President Hosni Mubarak to Egyptian cities, saying they “would not kill their brothers.” He added that Washington was forced to abandon plans to help Mubarak stay in power after “seeing millions head for the streets.”

If the result of the situation in Egypt is a move away from the peace process and toward armed conflict with Israel, the incoming leadership in Egypt may be see their American-supplied arms as giving them an edge they may not have had the last time they went to war, in 1973. Then, the Egyptians, with their Soviet-trained and supported military came very close to defeating the Israelis, only to make a series of tactical mistakes in the Sinai that resulted in a comprehensive Israeli victory.

However, the Israeli military is a very different animal in a "conventional" conflict than it is in the situation in Gaza. If the Egyptians start something with their military, the Israelis will finish it.

Seriously, what are they thinking, threatening a nuclear power?

Israel would never use nukes in a conventional conflict, but if the country's survival

was at stake? Do they think Israel would just roll over and let Egyptian tanks

In a conventional conflict, the Israelis would take the Egyptian military to the cleaners, American kit, or not. And if it's just Egypt (not likely) it wouldn't even be close.
