There are cases where people who are habitual DUI offenders lose their license permanently. I support that. The function of a car is not even close to that of a gun. You're trying to shove a square peg through a round hole again.

slim - a couple of points here.

First of all the thread is not about trying to stop law-abiding, mentally stable Americans from owning a firearm. The thread is about a woman who clearly lost it (ala Loughner), Hence we are talking about how to keep firearms out of the hands of mentally unstable people. You would have to convince me that YOU are as mentally unstable as this woman to convince me that you don't see this as something everyone should take seriously.

Secondly, stop comparing cars to guns. Cars are designed to get people from Point A to Point B. Guns are designed to destroy, even if it's just a paper target or clay pigeon. THEY ARE NOT THE SAME TYPE OF THING. So stop comparing them. Unless you can show me some statistic that equates the number of people who are MURDERED by someone driving a car to the number of people MURDERED by someone with a gun.

Lastly, get rid of the Nanny State argument. This about a responsible Society protecting people from the mentally ill.

I do think there are some gun owners who deliberately obfuscate the issues as regards the emotional distance one can have when dispatching someone with a gun as apposed to other methods that require actual physical contact with the victim and how that contact significantly changes the dynamics of killing and the ability of the killer to dispatch more than one victim. I find that incredibly disengenuous and wonder if these people really can't connect the dots. If they can't, then surely they are not responsible enough to own the guns they cherish?

After all this time on VJ the most important thing I have learned is someone going back and forth with RJ or Lisa is entertaining to watch, but sooo not even worth it for the person trying to go head to head with them. I'd just give up slim. You're not going to win.
