 Hi,

Through the Embassy I can get my future hubby's "proof of nationality" if I can provide a certified copy of passport from him;

Where can we get a certified copy of passport? At the USCIS or just by a notary?

Thx for replies!

Context?

There's no such thing as a certified copy of a US passport.

A United States Passport is issued by the goverment and therefore already can be considered as a certified document. As long as you show them your pssport and not a copy of the data page you should be fine.

I'll try to be more specific.

I need to get together a bunch of papers for the cityhall here in Brussels. All this has to be done at least 2 weeks before the wedding. After the wedding we will start the DCF procedure.

My bf will come just one week before the wedding, so now we need to get all together before he comes to Belgium.

One document, "proof of nationality" , I can get in his place at the Am Emb at 1 condition, that I can provide a certified copy of his passport.

So that is what I was wondering; what do they mean by "certified copy"?

Here in Belgium you can get it at your cityhall, but seems like in USA you wont get it there. (Dep of State)

Than he also needs to sign a paper that he wants to marry me. He wrote a "letter of intent to marry" and got it signed by notary public but at my cityhall they said it was not valid.

They got me a paper in my language (procuration) that he needs to sign, but they need to verify his signature. So I guess they verify it with the signature of his passport...:angry: If I keep my head cool???? I guess I have to!

Thx for the replies, regards,

Margaux

Hi!

I don't know if this helps because my situation was different. What happened was I needed a copy of the biographical page of my passport certified. I am a Canadian citizen. My husband and I filed taxes jointly for 2005 even though I was still in Canada at that time. We had to get a copy of the biographical page of my passport notarized to get an ITIN in order to file taxes jointly. Anyway, I went to the US consulate in Montreal and had that done there. The consulate has what they call "American Citizen Services" and one of the services they offer was notarizing/certifying documents.

Maybe you can give the US consulate there (in Belgium) a call and ask them if they could notarize/certify your bf's passport for DCF purposes when he is there.

Good luck!

PS

I guess it's not possible for him to get a copy of his US birth certificate?

I understand now + your post from the other day. Check the US Consulate Brussles' site under 'american citizen services' etc--they may be able to help with navigating the marriage thing. Getting married in Europe is a pain for USCs!

I would look into the birth certificate & see if city hall will accept a copy of that.

Douible check abouit the intent to marry thing too, that's new to me (what isn't?) and see if it's not 'free to marry' or 'proof of single status'. That's a common European requirement that is hard to fill from the US. Tell your BF to look into his Secretary of State's office if that's what they want.
