Food staples starting to run out in Egypt

(CNN) -- While discontent, resentment and nationalism continue to fuel demonstrations, one vital staple is in short supply: food.

Many families in Egypt are fast running out of staples such as bread, beans and rice and are often unable or unwilling to shop for groceries.

"Everything is running out. I have three children, and I only have enough to feed them for maybe two more days. After that I do not know what we will do." school administrator Gamalat Gadalla told CNN.

The unrest has paralyzed daily life in Egypt with many grocers closing shop and spotty food shipments.

"With the curfew, there are no restaurants, food or gas. Basic goods will soon be in shortage," Sandmonkey, an Egyptian blogger said via Twitter.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has ordered a curfew in Egypt to be extended from 3 p.m. to 8 a.m. on Monday, further stifling normal life in the embattled nation.

Egyptian state-run Nile TV has set up a hotline for citizens to call in and report bread shortages. There has been no other indication of what the Egyptian government is doing to address the crisis.

politicsworld--Internet working from Egypt but via dial-up. Never throw away your old modems!

security4all--So people don't throw away those old modems just yet... Or get a ham radio! ;-)

Food and Gas—

meazouz--Banks are closed in Egypt with little cash and no income, people can't buy food!

Selnadeem--My mom: "It is not easy to buy food and products as many supermarkets were stolen and others are closed in Cairo.

gChamich--like people are doing with security, they need to organize food and petrol.

ghorab--Gas stations very crowded on 30/1.

Tahirimran--People tell me that food is in shortage as shops open for limited time & movement of good is restricted. Lack of fuel too.

Protection—

SultanAlQassemi--From my cousin's family in Egypt: Thugs are attacking households in Cairo to steal, neighbourhood protection teams being formed.

bencnn--My wonderful wife has handed out baseball bats, clubs, kitchen knives and tea to neighbourhood patrol.

beleidy--But I keep thinking of these semi-automatics and the people down there with sticks and pipes, not a good match.

waelabbas--a red shaheen car just opened machine gun fire at people protecting the streets in dokki and they returned fire.

ShereefAbbas--I never knew so many of my neighbors had that amount of rifles & guns!!

beleidy--Every intersection is blocked with rocks and metal poles, there is wood for a small fire in every intersection as well, there are 4-5 guns.

beleidy--At one point in time you will have to defend yourself by yourself, prepare for it.

beleidy--People should be trained for this, some basics on protecting an area would be helpful and would skip loads of debate.

ahmedomar79--My brother is part of the neighborhood watch in Agouza, they also prepared Molotov cocktails and established a password.

Yeah, a lot of people don't like having guns around, but it will be good to have one handy when the SHTF.
