If someone gets a visitor's visa what is the time period for use? Like do they have to use it within 6 months?

No; it is usually issued for multiple entries and valid for 10 years. Some countries issue visitor visas that are valid for less than 10 years, but the terms are otherwise the same.

Depends on the visa, as the CO has some discretion as to what to grant. The most common one is a one year or ten year multiple entry visa. This means it can be used anytime within the year/ ten years (so you could wait nine years before using it). However, they can also grant you a visa with "from and to" specific dates, ie if you tell them you want to go for two weeks around New Years, they may only give you that time.

Some of my fiances family is going to try to get visas to come for the 'wedding' in OCtober. Should they start to apply now? Even if its one year they would use it within the time period.

I'd go ahead and apply now- it could take a couple of months to get an interview, and if there are any problems, there would be time to rectify it. Beware that it is quite difficult to get tourist visas from your country unless the person has very strong ties/ proof they must return.

I know its a hard process. One is a ghana government official so that should be easier. Its worth a try- you dont know if you dont try! And we would like hopefully some family here.
