Do you have a reason to believe it might happen, or is this just a general worry?

Does the petitioner have other income (pension, social security, disability, investment income)? It doesn't take much, only about $18,750 per year or so (don't know the exact figure), assuming no additional dependents.

Get another job and/or line up a co-sponsor.

The income requirement for two people is $18,000 something per YEAR. You can make that much working as a cashier at a grocery store. It is not a difficult line to cross. You do not have to have proof of income until the interview.

Before NOA2...? You don't have to do anything.. the petitioner doesnt have to be working to get an approved I-130. Later it would be important.. if he/she still isn't working then all is needed is a co-sponsor and you're set.

The two teens will increase his family size to three and his income requirements accordingly. I would check around for someone that could be a co-sponsor if necessary. Unemployment or severence is not considered permanent income for the affidavit of support.

Be proactive and start looking for a new job now. Employers are more likely to give consideration to someone who is still employed that the unfortunate guy who was laid off (sad but true). Tell him to get his resumes out there now - sign up with temp agencies - ANYTHING. The important thing is to have a steady income before the time of your interview (and after, of course).
