It's all about what's important to the individual. What's your priority?

I have been a health nut for most of my life...going to the gym 3 hours a day 7 days a week. Never did anything unhealthy...and all my friends were bodybuilders and fitness freaks just like me.

I got into a car accident that almost killed me *most of you know about this cos I've talked about it before* but in the scheme of things...I gained over 100 POUNDS IN A YEAR!!! I'm not talkin I sat on my azz and just ate Maccy D's....steriods, cortisone shots, being bedridden, etc...and whoops...there it is. I remember it was my own personal hell that it was happening, and I'd limit my calories to 500 a day and I still would gain weight, I was so depressed that I cried all the time. I spoke to my docs about it and was told 'if you live long enough for it to be an issue, we'll deal with it then' or 'it's a secondary issue' erm, secondary to whom?

Now it's very hard to lose weight, and there are a zillion reasons why it's so 'difficult'. But I wanted it, so I did it. It took a while, and lots of pain, etc...but as soon as I was cleared to go to the gym, it was on.

And I lost every pound of it.

I'm not sayin this for 'bravo me' but we all can sit here and talk of Maccy D's, how expensive food is, the fact that we have to drive instead of walk, blah blah blah the gov't doesn't need to get involved to make parks and walkways because the truly committed will do it anyways, and those who aren't...well, they won't do it at all despite the nice parks and whatnot. It's personal responsibility...nothing more nothing less. It's not easy and it hurts and it's sh!t sometimes, but it is what it is.

....if you want it bad enough, you'll do it. And nothing will stop you!

_Employers should offer their workers benefits that help them stay healthy, such as nutrition counseling and subsidized health club memberships.

Employers should offer their workers a $1,000 bonus for 10 pounds of weight lost, and

deduct it from their paychecks if they gain it back.

What if you gain muscle weight?

Then you have to arm wrestle your boss to get it back again.

Good for you Lisa.

I can't do three hours a day. So boring. I try to do an hour 4 or 5 days a week. I've been very faithful lately.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Wow, Lisa...I never knew about that. What is the medical reason for weight gain from steroids? I've heard about it - like Jerry Lewis started looking really puffy in the face when he was taking steroids for back pain. Are you fully recovered from the wreck? I tore my ACL in my right knee and had it replaced over a year ago while playing basketball. I'm now doing light squats but I still don't have the strength in that leg that I used to have and I'm scared to try and play basketball again.

Oh, I've gotten soft, I don't do that anymore, lol...that was over the top. ;) Now it's 1.5 hours 3 or 4 times a week.

But I was remiss in adding one thing: it's not easy. When I got fat, after a while, I was like '** it' and indulged in all the things I never allowed myself to eat. It was awesome! I love lil Debbie cakes and greasy burgers and drinking booze like mad. And there were (and are) times when I justify why I dont' have the time for the gym. It's not easy to lose weight, so I'm not sat here preaching that it's a piece of cake.

I went on meds afterwards that got me fat again...not as much but still...so it's always an uphill battle. But it's mine to win or lose & no one else's. I'm really appauled at the blame placing elsewhere... the answer lies within yourself...not the gov't or employers or anybody else. If you want it, go get it. If not, that's fine too...whatever makes you happy. But own the decision as yours and no one else's. That's my point

True enough, but your argument doesn't accomodate people who are committed to losing weight but can't really afford gym fees. They can be expensive, especially around where I live.

Check out Central Park and see how many people use it to go jogging. Now imagine if the park didn't exist...

The benefits of open space and public parks are so many that there just isn't any excuse at all for not having any. Yet, many suburban communities don't. And that's tragic.

I have always wondered if the obesity problem is down to "genes" why the generations before us were not so overweight -- has this gene been recessive until now?

I am being only partly facetious

I believe the argument is that a genetic "tendency" to gain weight becomes completely moot if your caloric intake simply doesn't allow for it. When caloric intake begins to exceed caloric expenditure, the "tendencies" are allowed to manifest themselves.

My trick is to just walk in the door of the gym. Once I walk in the door I work out. It's easy to make excuses not to work out. But it's easy to just walk through a door. I'm also house trained. ;)

There are plenty of exercises you can do even at home without it costing much at all.

Are you saying there are no public health benefits at all to having open space?

I'm saying if a person is committed to losing weight, lack of open space will not be an issue.
