Im going to be a pain here lol

The United Kingdom is made up of various countries. If one lives in Ireland, they would put Ireland not United Kingdom. Why would that be any different for England?

Actually, technically, the UK is one country or sovereign state, made up of territories (Falkland Islands), crown possessions (Channel Islands) and nations (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland - though these can sometimes be called 'constituent countries'). These are not countries in their own right per se because they do not offer their populations citizenship (ie. passports) in their own right. The correct short name for the country is the United Kingdom as it is officially 'The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland'.

Great Britain is England, Scotland and Wales. Strangely, a person who is from the UK has a British nationality or citizenship. I guess in the same way that someone from the US is American...

The reason some people put 'Ireland' is that they're from the Republic of Ireland (or Southern Ireland) - which is a different country entirely from the UK. In fact, if you suggested to an Irish person that their country was the UK, they might get very mad about it.

However, because of common usage, you can put UK, GB or England/Scotland/Wales/NI and people will know what you mean.

Of course, my only experience is of putting the UK down for my visa application, so I can't advise on doing anything else and knowing whether it's successful or not. It probably will be as others have testified. Personally, I managed to get 'UNITED KINGDOM' into that little box, but I had to try quite hard.

Sorry, I'll get my coat...

hahahahaha nah you dont have to leave. Thanks for the explaination as it helped me to understand

I guess you have a point, Wenchie, except that Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom while Ireland is just Ireland. I'm sure those from N. Ireland (becca!) put N. Ireland on their I 129Fs instead of United Kingdom.

I just thought UK because when I pull up the site for the London consulate, it says London, UK.

Doesn't make it 'right', technically, but there you go.

Don't know how this thread got resurrected but since it did....

We put "UK/N. Ireland" in the little boxes.

...... The correct short name for the country is the United Kingdom as it is officially 'The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland'.....

......The reason some people put 'Ireland' is that they're from the Republic of Ireland (or Southern Ireland) - which is a different country entirely from the UK. In fact, if you suggested to an Irish person that their country was the UK, they might get very mad about it......

True that on the correct name.

And....some people from Northern Ireland might not like to be referred to as Irish.....

Tee hee.......I just love you Brits. You all crack me up! Geographically you hail from a little ball of mud out in the Atlantic that is further divided into wee countries, and you are each so darn proud of them! I think it's grand!!! (Don't EVEN get me started about how small Northern Ireland is - hahahaha!) Does that wonderful pride come from having been the empire that the sun never sank on?

Gosh I love the UK. Mebbe I should go live there, eh?

This is a very interesting thread. It reminds me of a fillable form way back last year thats only option for citizenship, place of birth and current residence the only drop down option was the long "United Kingdom/N. Ireland." I later disguarded using that particular fill in document as I was adviced here somebody went to their interview with it and got a telling off. I'm sure it wasn't for that reason but it made me think of it. Then I decided to just fill the form in by hand from one of the packets when I actually got them ...with Scotland as my birthplace and England UK as my current country of residence and of course a british citizen.

I wish the "UK" would just be a dang state of the US it'd be so much more simplier. But here's somebody here who thought Seatle was a state *runs.*

Love hurts

When you live an ocean away

When you change your sleep schedule to catch a few more moments

When you really need to be held and you have to imagine whilst your partner describes it

When you constantly refresh the USCIS website to see if you're getting any closer

Love Loves

When it repays you with the love of your life

When God finally answered your biggest prayer

When you can live life again in the real world but still have that eternal connection

When you wake up for to the beginning of the rest of your life with the person you fought so hard for

When you love somebody that much

You'll do anything

heheh, me too. The whole of GB fits inside my state with room to spare, but you drive 10 miles in the UK and you get a different 'regional' accent.

Reminds me of my Brit friends who are going to Disney in Florida and say we should come meet them (I think they might have the shorter flight!).
