I asked a very simple ###### question, and 95% of the posters decided to answer a completely different question. I mean, do they make farangs drink from separate, tainted fountains in Thailand? FFS

They had a meetup back in 2006 when I was living there. Most of the guys were weirdos from Pattaya. I thought I met all the boneheads in Suk. These guys took a bus from Chantuburi. Live and learn I guess.

I guess I'll ask this question on here then: anyone know how to best avoid paying exorbitant (or any) duties on a cheap phone mailed from the U.S. to Thailand? I've read quite a few horror stories about this.

Probably not an option for my MIL. I figure she won't be able to find a phone that will work both in Europe, Japan, and the U.S. Nor does she live near BKK. If I don't set this up myself, the chances of things going wrong are high. She doesn't even know how to use the contacts list on her phone now, so I figured I'd just ship her one with a world SIM card inside and setup a speed dial to call us if she has any problems during her journey to the U.S..

Are you really making her fly through all those countries??? Why not get her a more direct flight to the USA?

I thought about that too & talked to some others who were in the same situation. It sounds like a good idea to include cards with English on the front and Thai on the back for most encounters and a letter from me and my wife to give to the border officer explaining the situation. We know one couple, specifically, that has done this every time their MIL visits and she has visited many times - no English either.

Are you really making her fly through all those countries??? Why not get her a more direct flight to the USA?

I think she would have an easier time flying directly to LAX on Thai Air, and then catching a connecting flight to wherever you are. I know the Thai Airlines are very good about helping Thai people get to where they are going once they are off the plane. My wifes aunt came to see her cousin in Chicago, and went through LAX, and they helped her out alot. Might be more money, but I think it would be worth it, so you know she will make it safely.

A friend of mine flew here from Poland when he was 12, he couldn't speak any english, and his cousin had made some cards for him before he left Poland and he was able to get through the airport.

We have had great luck with CBP, the last guy we got was from the Philippines, and was really nice. Maybe you ought to lay off the booze on the flights
