Yeah, same here, in LA and Miami people always tried to speak Spanish with her. Usually they were white guys though.

when people talk to either my husband or i on the phone they always ask if he's indian because of the name although it doesn't sound india it's just they don't think thai first .

usually people speak to me in spanish but i'm chinese and white (happen to speak spanish so it's fine but it is funny)

on a side note my husband just experienced his second bitter taste of racism. he was in the lab of his doctor's office to have hep b & c as well as an hiv test per the requirements of our state athletic commission for all professional athletes and the lab tech said the following:

lab tech: looks at name on list and then looks in waiting room, looks to us and says oh well that must be you, come here.

us: look at eachother and giggle she won't try say his name

inside the lab:

lab tech: hmmmm hiv testing, hep b& c testing...o well you must be from southeast asia

i said to her, that was out of line and she shouldn't make any assumptions as to why someone would take these tests and certainly not based on their country of origin. what a lack of sensitivity what if he actually had one of the illnesses?

lab tech: no need to get nasty, i'm sure your friend has heard it before.

husband: i'm not her friend i'm her husband (funny that was the only thing he was mad about) he could care less about the rest of it. he did mention to his doctor that she was rude though. (my husband said "in thailand i would give her slap" )

WOW! that was nasty! I would tell her that eventhough he must've heard it before doesnt mean it's acceptable! I'm glad your husband said something to the doctor.

I went to my midwife today and she asked about my diet (coz I gained 9 lbs last month ) and I told her mostly Asian.. so she said so mostly rice? that makes me smile - I eat my food with rice but I eat a lot less portion of rice than a lot of people but I didnt tell her that becasue it'd still be a lot more than usual here.. then she start saying I should eat brown rice and that she wont tell me to change my habit (I grow up with brown rice) of eating white rice.. I told her I dont mind - I didnt tell her though that I grow up with brown rice and only eat white just coz it's cheaper and I rarely eat rice here so it doesnt really matter to me. but I just nod.. It's not racism or anything, it's just funny

The guy is telling his children to leave. I guess it's ok if other people get hurt so he can have his way. His doesn't care 1 baht about Thailand. I honestly fell sorry for the red shirt people. This guy is a disgrace. I hope the red shirts see this for what it is: A broken man that wants his ill gotten gains, and doesn't care one bit about Thailand. Very sad actually.

If you listen to one of the leader (Arisman) he told people to go to Sirirat hospital (where the king is staying) why do you think? this is not a typical rally to oust the government but a movement to overthrown the whole democracy and the royal family. You can also see it from a heavy protection of the hospital by the Navy this time around.

hi all, a little help, my husband and i went to the consulate in l.a. a few weeks ago and renewed his passport. which arrived in the post yesterday however the old passport was not with it. my concern is that the old one contains the previous b1/b2 visas he had as well as his k-1 and our family vacation to china information including that visa. is there anyway we can get the old one back?

At long last - a mental health check for Thailand - why can't they offer that in Brooklyn?

BANGKOK (NNT) -- The Department of Mental Health has encouraged all Thais to check their mental health via an easy test of five questions and find ways for stress reduction accordingly upon the ongoing political tension.

Mental Health Department Director-General, MD Chatri Banchuen, stated that Thai people should beware of their own minds and not fall as victims of stress and tension.

He then recommended all Thais to take a mini-test to see if they are prone to stress leading to violent expressions or not.

The questions ask respondents to see if they are certain with five statements or not. The statements are as follows:

1) I am always frustrated upon political discussion.

2) I must argue with those having different political opinions.

3) I am engrossed in political issues more than personal ones.

4) I am always afraid of potential violent incidents in Thailand.

5) I always try to persuade others to agree with my political opinions.

Respondents will receive every two points for answering ‘yes’, one point for answering ‘uncertain’, and zero point for answering ‘no’.

Respondents scoring a total of 0-2 points can be interpreted as having normal political emotion and eligible to learn information from all sides.

Respondents with 3-5 points can be interpreted as having a moderate level of political emotion with own political stance, and able to accept different opinions.

However, they are prone to stress if they are too engrossed in politics, and so are advised to relax more.

Respondents with 6-10 points can be interpreted as having a strong level of political emotion and are at risk to high levels of stress. They are suggested to avoid any provoking situation or people and relax more.

The director-general stressed that mental health must be given priority during both normal and crisis periods. He said good mental health, serenity, and peace could be created if mental health is well managed.

MD Chatri said any people feeling uncomfortable or requiring mental health assistance can dial 1323 hotline around the clock.

Not sure - think you'll need to contact the embassy. My husband didn't need his old passport for anything (not for ROC nor will he need it when he applies for citizenship in the coming months), so we never had a need to ask for it back.

Sorry, this post isn't helpful, though I would be very interested to hear if you are able to get it back.

If he has his green card and the new passport, he should be fine for the US. I know the old K-1 and maybe the B-1/B-2 are irrelevant anyway. Probably going to have to apply for a new visa to China.

I had a 40 page US passport they yanked from me last time at POE because I had lost it, replaced it, and then found it again. Since I only had about a half a page left in the old passport, I tried to use it to enter the US. They took it from me. I guess their computers are better than most people think. I had valid visas in there to 4 or 5 countries. I guess it's no big deal now, but at the time kind of annoyed me.

hi all, thanks for the replies as it turns out the old one arrived in the post on Saturday, (they are not even supposed to keep it).

@ Thai Rath, that's good to know maybe for others who somehow wind up panicking like i did.

@ daboyz what a damn pain to have them take it from you not to mention it's nice to have the old one for the memories. would you have been able to have the visas "transferred" into a new passport if you had been able to keep it?
