hi all,

I'm going to see my fiance next month in Mexico. I had a question regarding her birth certificate. I have read through the Mexico portal that the beneficiary needs a birth certificate that is aposlted. Is that correct? I'm a bit confused. She was born in a different state so if she needs to get that, then I may go with her since long distance bus travel isn't always safe for a woman by herself. She was born in Jalisco state, now living in Guerrero. Thanks if anyone can clear that up.

Birth cert not needed when you file the I-129F, it is needed for visa interview, and later in the USA.

Birth Certificates Available. Birth Certificates (acta de nacimiento) are generally available since 1870, although in many municipalities the records prior to 1915 have been partially or totally destroyed. A letter may be obtained certifying that no record is available, except in the Federal District where civil registry officials decline to issue such negative statements to individuals. Birth certificates are issued by the appropriate Official del Registro Civil (official of the Civil Registry), and, in the Federal District, by the Jefe de la Oficina del Registro Civil del Distrito Federal (Chief of the Office of the Federal District) in whose archives are consolidated the records of subordinate civil registries of the Federal District. A charge may be made for searching the records.

Civil registries receive delayed birth registrations, based upon the testimony of witnesses. If of recent date, and especially if long delayed, these may be open to question. Baptismal certificates (fe de bautismo) issued by religious authorities are not considered by the Mexican government to be official documents. In cases in which the delay of a birth record raises serious questions regarding identity, however, baptism certificates may be offered as secondary evidence. The most reliable baptism record is a photocopy of the entire page of the baptism book issued under the seal of the parish where the baptism in question is recorded.

You need to get copies of your birth certificate in Mexico from the office where it was originally registered when you were born, otherwise they won't be true certified copies. My husband had to track down the correct office where his was registered. So yes, I think you will need to make a trip with her to Jalisco. Just go ahead and get a few copies while you are already there. Good luck.

Thanks Jay-Kay. Anything else I should be thinking about while I'm down there? This will be the last visit until our appt in Juarez. Anticipating/hoping for NOA 2 in early June, so just want to accomplish anything that will help us be as prepared as possible when the date comes. Thanks.

I concur with Jay-Jay,

My fiancee will need to travel to Mexico City for that same reason. Do get copies apostilled and then translated afterwords. As always save your trip reciepts for future proof of an ongoing relationship ( both yours & hers bus boarding passes, hotel stays, etc). If you haven't done so, update her copy of the I-129F you sent with the additional NAO1 you received, that way it is updated. I can not think of anything else, but be careful and enjoy your time together!!! Jalisco is a beautiful state and Guadalajara has a lot to offer!

My best to you!

Sorry YuAndDan, I should have been clearer, we already filed and I'm trying to start getting things together for the visa interview. She has to travel for this, so I'd like to get the BC now so she doesn't travel alone in certain parts of mexico. Thanks.

Thanks eff, sounds like it's best to get more than one copy just to be safe. I guess she'll need in Juarez and later here in USA, so we'll get a few copies. Lucky for me, that will require travel to Puerto Vallarta. lol, could be a lot worse places to go.

I would get 5 copies at least while you are there. I would also maybe look into police report for her from the area since that is also required at interview! Best wishes, & I wish you awesome bunches of luck & fun!

Police reports are not needed for Juarez unless you have a criminal record. If you have never been convicted of a crime, they are not needed. My husband did not need one.

Quote taken from the K-1 packet information on the Juarez Consulate website: http://ciudadjuarez.usconsulate.gov/root/pdfs/k1packet-complete_may2010.pdf

5. Persons convicted of a crime must obtain a certified copy of each court record and any prison record, regardless of the fact that they may have benefited subsequently from an amnesty, pardon, or other act of clemency.

Pto Vallarta is one of my favorite places to go. I was just there last November with Ross. It was our 'honeymoon' since we will not be able to get away over here once we marry for real under the law. You'll have to stop by one place called "La Bodeguita del Medio" a cuban resturant which serves aweome Mojitos! They have live music Tuesday night through Saturday night. Don't forget to order your typical cuban sandwich !!! Yummie in the tummy!! Hehehe! Man I wish I were there today because tomorrow we are going to be hit with quite a snowstorm in Chicago! Take care and enjoy!

eff

p.s. placed a pic from La B del M. Man the Havana Club Rum was outstanding!! jejeje
