Last week, the pundits on talk radio and in the conservative blogosphere were ... blasting Gov. Chris Christie for betraying his conservative beliefs by handing a judgeship to a lawyer [sohail Muhammed] who defended Muslims detained after 9/11.

...

It was not surprising when he nominated Mohammed to a judgeship in Passaic County. This was entirely in keeping with Christie’s prior outreach to the Islamic community.

Many conservatives did not approve of that outreach. Steve Emerson, a nationally known expert on Islamic extremism, was critical of the nominee and his sometime-client, Muhammed Qatanani, an imam from Paterson who is in the midst of a long legal fight against deportation to the Palestinian territories.

Emerson wrote that "Qatanani has a history of Hamas support and was related by marriage to a leading Hamas operative in the West Bank." When Christie was U.S. attorney, Emerson wrote, he embraced Qatanani at a Ramadan breakfast.

Shocking? Not to anyone who has a clue about Christie. His relationship with Qatanani is entire in keeping with his politics.

Qatanani is the type of imam adored by politicians trying to prove their multicultural bona fides. I interviewed him not long after the 9/11 attacks and found him to be an intelligent and articulate spokesman, who came out firmly against terrorism and who gave an articulate explanation of the Muslim worldview.

Unfortunately, that’s a worldview conservatives instinctively reject. Many conservatives have seen the attempts in Europe to create communities where Islamic law is enforced.

Conservatives fear that sort of thing could happen here. Liberals pooh-pooh it. That’s a pretty clear dividing line, and [Chris Christie] seems to be on the liberal side of it.

He’s entitled to his opinion, but he’s sure taking a beating for it. As career moves go, this one ... could be fatal to any national hopes Christie has.

...

For most of American history, ethnic groups here have imported fights from overseas. Politicians are wise to stay out of them.

Because Chris Christie has stated, in no uncertain terms, that he's not interested in running for President?

It would be silly to nominate someone who doesn't want to run, don't ya think? :)

To my knowledge, he has ruled out 2012. Not 2016 or 2020.

"I hereby state, and mean all that I say, that I never have been and never will be a candidate for President; that if nominated by either party, I should peremptorily decline; and even if unanimously elected I should decline to serve."

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."
