Errors in English

"Egg-zit" and "eck-sit" are both proper pronunciations of the word "exit." In many English words, many consonants in certain words can be either voiced or un-voiced, particularly in the middle of words. Butter, for instance, can be "but-ter" or "bud-der." Raspberry can be razberry, or rasperry. Going on a rant about how people should pronounce things the way you want them to when in fact their pronunciation is equally valid just paints one as an ignorant snob.

As I mentioned before, each letter of the alphabet has a "sound" that each letter makes. Grade school teachers and speech therapists, when grading students, "What sound does (pick a letter) make?" If a child gets to "x" and they say that it makes a "guh" sound, that will be marked as an error.

It's not a "guh" sound but rather a "gz" sound. But that's a little beyond the point. Letters make different sounds in different words. Some words have multiple acceptable pronunciations, spellings, and plurals. You wouldn't say that "c" makes a "ch" sound on it's own but that is the proper pronunciation in "cello" and "ancient." The word "exaggerate" also features an "x" that is typically pronounced "gz."

My point is that, while proper grammar and pronunciation are important, there are many instances in the English language where multiple variants are correct. If you want to be a grammar nazi, pick only on things that are strictly incorrect.
