i think at some point there was fee charged on atm transactions. it might of been a push by the banks to get ppl onto the debit cards. never understood that. personnaly, i am a credit card man. pay it off the endof month. interest free loan whilst i shop. ;)

Well I agree with you all. I can't stand to get in line behind someone who is writing their check. I really hate it when they stand there the whole time, waiting, then bring out the check book after the person is done ringing them up. Hello, you knew you had to pay somehow. Get your damn checkbook out and be ready if your writing a check.

Not to mention the showing of the valid ID which is never fished out of the purse/wallet until asked (they are going to ask everytime...), the need to fill in the check register right there, after the transaction is done and the receipt/packages handed over, and the ever-popular "everything must be put away in the same place it came from" activity where the register, the ID and the pen must be put just so in the wallet/purse.

Of course, I'm the type to pocket my change, card, etc. and fix it all up in the car, so I might be a little biased there. ;)

The answer to the merchants not taking Debit: Fees, fees, and then there's fees.

Someone is paying for a cash-free society, and it ain't the Federal Reserve Bank.

They started off doing that in Canada...a transaction fee for using the debit card. But then cheques were also charged a transaction fee, so it didn't make much difference. Then my credit union there went to a flat fee.

I have no idea how it works in our bank, I'm determined to remain oblivious to our financial situation until I'm working. :P

Electricity is really just organized lightning.

I take everything and shove it in my purse, grab the bag and run...but then I rarely put everything back where it belongs in the purse...

I seem to recall that years back, late 70's or very early 80's the ATM machine was something brand new in Canada. I'm not sure if they existed in the US at that time or not. I do recall that when the debit system went into place, I had heard that Canada was the "test site" for it. I believe the US did not implement it till years later. That may explain why check writing is still so common here, especially in the southern US. The one thing I have found TOTALLY amazing is the fact that our Visa Check Card (ie. debit card) has a daily limit of $2000 and or 10 transactions per 24 hours, even if you have more than that in the account.(We found out that interesting tidbit after trying to make a purchase and the card was denied...but lots of cash in the account  ....meanwhile cashier is sayin to herself...sure ya got money in your account  ) In Canada, as long as the money is in the account, I think the daily limit for point of purchase transactions is something like $10,000 and no limit to number of transactions. The other thing different, is that you can make a deposit through the ATM and get credit for it right away (Royal Bank), here, you can deposit at the ATM, but have to wait for it to be posted. Not sure if all banks around the country are like that, but ours is. Looks as if Canada is slightly ahead in the electronic banking industry..who would have thought? Hopefully the US will catch up soon!

Actually, it's different for every bank. My daily limit is only $1000. My mom and dad's bank has a daily limit of $600. It is very upsetting when you know you have the money and the card still won't work. You know the cashier thinks you are some dead beat trying to act like you have money.

Just couldn't stay my @ss away!

I've rarely run across any establishment that doesn't take a debit card here in Idaho. When I first came here I was amazed at the people pulling out chequebooks to pay for things. Once a woman in line ahead of me at a store once wrote a cheque out for an item worth like $1.95...lol. I go to one grocery store that is employee owned and they don't take debit cards - it's either cash or cheques. Well since I have next to nothing in cash that I carry around, I write a cheque. If I ever thought of writing a cheque in a grocery store back in Ontario, I would have been given the evil eye. I swear the clerks would look at you as if they were saying, "Don't even try it!"
