you know what I find strange about living here in Los Angeles,is that, yes, there is a lot of ATM machines but hardly any stores accept your ATM card  , where as in Canada, at least where i am from, almost every store, big or small accepts your ATM card

I have noticed that trend here (in NJ) too. When I was in college, I used my ATM card almost everywhere. Recently, I have noticed that many stores have signs up that say they don't accept debit cards. I wonder why.

I knew that the debit systems between Canada and the US weren't compatible...what boggles me about living here in WA is the amount of people that still write checks at the till. I mean, in Canada (Vancouver anyway) it's unheard of to do that anymore. Cash, debit or credit - most stores won't even take a check (or rather, cheque, as it's Canada... :P ). Here, I can't tell you how many times I've waited behind check-writers. I'm really surprised since a lot of the other US banking things seem to be modeled for efficiency (drive up banking, being able to initiate payment prior to final total being rung in, etc.).

Electricity is really just organized lightning.

That's interesting. I haven't seen anyone write a check around here in years. Most stores don't even take 'em.

I have been able to use my Canadian Debit card at the till a few places but I just find it strange that a lot more places won't take your ATM card, just credit or cash  , specially in a city this size

Do banks even list their ATM locations anymore?

Bank of America does, on their website. I know this because my wife asked me to look up ATM locations between where I work and where she works and I was just looking that up!

Hmmm. Maybe they do. I always dealt with one credit union, and a small one at that, and generally used the ATM they provided at my office. ;)

Just looked up our bank's site...they list locations but they go by map and you input criteria (like mapquest). So I guess I learned something new today.

Well, this is a small town, with the closest amenities to the nearby Oregon small town across the river. Maybe that's the difference. I might have thought it was a generational thing (seniors abound, and since I'm not working, I'm out when they are), but it's not just older people...it's a wide variety.

Well I agree with you all. I can't stand to get in line behind someone who is writing their check. I really hate it when they stand there the whole time, waiting, then bring out the check book after the person is done ringing them up. Hello, you knew you had to pay somehow. Get your damn checkbook out and be ready if your writing a check.

what kind of stores ain't takin the atm?

up here in northern cali, the grocery stores do take em. dunno 'bout the general stores sears/macy's etc... tho. shopping ain't my forte.

on hte check writing thing, yeah, some folks still do that around here too. haven't seen any stores banning em tho. i don't mind check writers as long as they don't wait till the total is rung up to begin writing the darn thing. oh, then they flop out the coupons and flip through em to see which ones are applicable. arggghhh.

a lot of the bigger stores do take the ATM but you have to understand the town where I am from, 99 percent of the stores take the ATM card, here it is usually only the big stores....
