I bought my children firearms before they were born. I never understood the story of making this kid wait so long for a rifle, and then giving him a BB gun. Each got a .22 rifle, a 20 guage shotgun, a mid-caliber rifle (.243, .250 Savage, etc.) and a .22 revolver. Later I added a .30-06 and a centerfire handgun for each. Good birthday presents. Their names were engraved once we knew them and the guns were kept in their bedroom from the day they were born.

The only reason this kid would possibly have "shot his eye out" is because his irresponsible parents didn't teach him firearm safety from the day he was born and expose him to firearms at all times.
