You should call and ask your state tax office but I don't think

it is a good idea to send the original passport to IRS even on Federal

But state do not give ITIN so you cannot send state as you stated unless

I am missing something!

Since there is a different mailing address for the federal return from the state return, should you make an extra copy of the W7 to go with the state return? If you attach the passport with the original W7 to the federal return, what would you attach to your state return?

Bumping this up and hopefully someone on here can answer my question.

Basically I have also filed my tax return as single and need to get it amended ASAP before sending in the tax returns with the I864. How long does it take to amend?

Also wanted to know if I amend the tax return as "married buy filing separately", do I need a notarized copy of my husband's passport? He does not live in the US and his current passport is expired (in the process of renewing will take some time).

Should I just send in the tax return I have currently, that was filed as single, with the I864 and attach a letter explaining that I am amending the tax return to married but filing separately? Or would that raise red flags to the interview officer at the interview?

You write NRA (non-resident alien) where they ask for the ITIN or SSN. I do not know how long it takes to amend the return.

EDIT this is an very old thread and there was a new one created for this year! Next time please do a little searching for something more recent. In the Advance Search tool you can specify dates.
