Hi everyone

I am leaving for the US soon and unfortunately I am not a very good cook. I know for sure that I will miss Filipino food and so I want to practice cooking it! I know I cannot survive on just pizza, burger, mashed potato and pasta, I need my rice and meats! Fortunately, my fiance also likes Filipino food (especially chicken dishes like adobo, afritada) but he wasn't a fan of sinigang which he found too sour, and also he doesn't eat cheese!

I was hoping we could use this thread to post tried and tested recipes, I know there are many online but I would to try a recipe that people can vouch for. And also, what filipino food does your USC husband enjoy?

Thanks in advance! :)

My Journey:

I received my conditional 2-year greencard (AOS) in 2.5 months with no interview (April-June 2011)

Our son was born 02/03/2013

I received my masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology 04/17/2013

I received my 10-year greencard (ROC) in 3 months with no interview (March-June 2013)

My husband returned from deployment 06/20/2013

My naturalization journey took 4 months (April-August 2014)

I became a US citizen on 08/01/2014

Received passport in 3 weeks (regular processing)

Thank you, VJ! smile.png

Hubby loves lumpia, pancit bihon, bistek tagalog, fried rice, pork barbeque and pancit canton..lol..He never get sick and tired of this stuff. Like your hubby my husband loves Filipino food too. When I don't cook we normally go to a Chinese buffet and pretty much eating there is like dinning in the Philippines

He doesn't like sinigang??? That's just blasphemy! Just kidding.

I'm the USC husband, and I'm also half Filipino. So I suppose my answers will be biased. But here are a few that I find delicious:

1) Adobo (pork or chicken...or both) - Most everyone seems to love adobo.

2) Sinigang - I still can't believe he doesn't like this!

3) Kare-kare - You can use boneless beef, if he doesn't want to try oxtail.

4) Pinakbet - Definitely one of my favorite recipes! If he is a fan of veggies, this should be the winner.

5) Lumpia - Another excellent dish. More of an appetizer though, IMO.

6) Giniling - A basic dish of ground pork, diced potatoes, carrots, and some crushed garlic.

7) Inihaw na liempo - One of my favorites! Hard to beat Andok's, though.

8) Kaldareta - Traditionally made with goat. But I would stick with beef or even lamb. Goat has a very gamey smell that may turn him off to trying.

9) Bicol express - a sweet and spicy dish. Shrimp is very good, but ground/diced pork is great, too!

These are more exotic recipes that, hopefully, he would try:

1) Dinuguan aka chocolate meat - Excellent, excellent dish. Easily a top five dish, in my book! Hopefully, you have access to fresh ingredients.

2) Sisig - Born in Pampanga, Philippines. One of the best polutan dishes ever! Best served with some alcohol.

Well, this is my $0.02. I sure hope he finds at least one he likes. My wife and I also cannot survive on fast foods here. She and I both grew up eating rice daily.

Good luck with cooking here in the States. The ingredients may be, at times, challenging to find. But it is very do-able. All the best!

Rick's favorite Filipino food is sinigang na hipon (shrimp sinigang), hands down. He will eat it everyday if he could. (There is a lovely Asian seafood store here in Tallahassee called Mike's so I get my Filipino condiments and shrimp there). He also likes tocino. The easiest way to make it is to buy pork belly or pork butt (with a little fat in in if you can find it), and then marinate it with Mama Sita's Tocino Mix an hour (covered in saran wrap) before you cook it. Not quite Pampanga's Best, but out here, it's pretty darn good. :) He does enjoy nilagang baka (beef nilaga) now and then. The veggies are easy to find here...I can't put in cabbage though, he doesn't eat it. He likes pork barbecue but I can't put a lot of ground peppercorns in it (he dislikes pepper with a passion lol but loves jalapenos and Louisiana hot sauce...go figure).

I do know how to make other Filipino food, but most of the dishes I know how to make have soy sauce in it (like adobo, mechado, menudo, afritada, callos, etc.), and he cannot eat a lot of it, unfortunately (makes him ill).

Be smart, have a plan, and hang on to the people you love. - Chris Gardner

I love giniling with lots of ketchup (banana or tomato). My wife now dreads making it because she insists on chopping the carrots and potatoes by hand, which takes a lot of time.

There aren't too many Filipino dishes that I've tried that I didn't like - the food is just so dang tasty (perhaps all the MSG).

Sinigang - love the eggplant and other vegetables.

Pancit - so many variations, but my favorite is the thinner noodles with the strips of fungus

Biko (sp) - the sticky rice dessert

Hoomba (sp) - chunks of flavored pork

Sotanghon (sp) - the glass noodles in a soup base ...perfect on a cold day.

and probably my favorite, Kangkong (sp) - I love the contrast between the crunchy stalks of the water spinach with the mushiness of its sauteed leaves. :)

All that food sounds good as long that you don't care about your health. Most of the mentioned are so oily or fried stuff. That is okay, i am not worried about that when she comes. She can cook whatever she wants for her and her kid. I'll cook the things I consider good for my body :)

I like chicken adobo thought. I tried it and it was pretty good.

"... In JAPAN?????" :bonk: LOL ... LOL.... NOT! lol those are not Japanese on that video .... lol ..... they Flips!

We can give the balut over though if they want.

Look at it again. The intro is not saying the people are Japanese (you can see the Jeepney in the background, even). It is simply saying in other words, "Hey, for Westerners this Balut in the Philippines has extreme Japanese food beat."

"Japan ain't got nothin' on the Philippines for extreme foods" IOW.
