Excess Baggage

We flew from O'Hare to Pittsburgh with 8 pieces of luggage - stuffed to the gills and VERY heavy. No problem transferring to the smaller jet that flew into Pittsburgh.

Its not the fact that they can't fit on the jets/turboprops, but just that you have to go through a check in desk again as its at a different airport, and if the flight was booked seperately, I was concerned the deal they have on excess baggage might not carry over to the short haul flight.

Real planes fly in there Robert. I don't know where you live, but I get the distinct impression you think everything out of your apparent big city element is.... second rate?

Err... who's Robert? Are you talking to me here? I'm not sure. But if you are, I don't live in a big city (42,000 population), I'm 3 hours drive from Philadelphia, in case you think I live there.

With the change of airports I'm pretty sure you'll have to pay the fee again since you'll have to re-check your bags. Add to that the cost of getting to the other airport and it's a pretty $$ trip.

I too moved to the USA via American Airlines and also had to connect to a smaller plane, but I didn't have to change airports. I had my 2 checked plus 1 carry-on and my regular purse/bag that I stuffed to the gills. I was expecting to pay for excess baggage but it turns out I was under the weight limit and was just a weakling who couldn't lift my own bags.

Yeah, this was definitely my impression as well, but maybe the OP has already factored that in.

I think he's going to JFK for a temporary EAD. Could be wrong.

Off topic but are you moving to Pittsburgh Mark? Not many of us Brits around these parts!

Helen

Hi, there, Helen,

I'll be moving to near Pittsburgh. Well, near in US terms, anyway. I'll be about 50 miles NE of Pittsburgh, near Kittanning.

When I visited, there didn't seem to be that many English people :D They struggled to understand what I was saying half the time and I think I've got a nondescript plain sort of English accent!

To all,

I am going to JFK for a temporary EAD. However, no-one appears to fly from the UK into JFK and then onto Pittsburgh direct. I can go from Manchester to Chicago to Pittsburgh (which would be a lot better for me because I'm not so far from Manchester!), but not through JFK.

American seem to be the closest with the Heathrow-JFK and then La Guardia-Pittsburgh plan. I've been told that I won't get charged TWICE for excess baggage if I use the same airline for my connecting flights as long as my connection is made within 24 hours of arrival. If I used American for my first leg and then Delta for my second, I'd get charged twice for the excess baggage, IFSWIM.

The pain will be carting muchos bags from JFK to La Guardia. There's a transit bus that takes about 30 minutes and I can imagine that'll be a whole bundle of fun...

Mark

I know for a fact that Delta fly direct from JFK to Pittsburgh. However as its a different airline I guess that doesn't help you!

Oh gosh I must have been REALLY tired when I wrote this. I thought you were another poster. Sorry.

The best advice I can give is to be very strict with yourself and ditch clothes that you really don't wear anymore. With the security heightened at the moment, you are going to be very restricted on what you will be permitted to take on and check in. Ditch/sell what you can and then buy what you need in the U.S. Fashions change ;)

I just came back from Texas to N.Ireland and was prepared to bring a lot back but I went through my stuff and just thought well if I haven't worn it/used it for near a year, i don't really need it. As a result I have 8 trash bags full of stuff that is on its way to the charity shops to sort out :D The most I'll be taking back is what I came with, over 1000 rosettes that my dog and I won and my framed degree :D

This is exactly what Simon is doing. He's hardly bringing any clothing with him at all, and I've been building up an entirely new wardrobe for him over the past several months. That has been FUN!!!! :) He's only bringing some things that can't be replaced, and the rest of his baggage is personal items and collections and stuff.

He also shipped 8 huge boxes about two weeks ago via ExcessBaggage, it should arrive on our doorstep around the time we are freaking out with final wedding plans.

It always figures.

DA,

I'm a Brit who is looking to marry my wonderful fiancée - whenever my K-1 visa finally finds its way into my grubby little mitts (hopefully within a couple of weeks).

I will be selling all the stuff in the UK that I can, but I imagine I'll be taking three suitcases of my belongings over with me on the flight to the U S of A.

Let's say I'm flying from Heathrow to JFK to Pittsburgh (which I probably am). Does anyone have the slightest idea (rough guestimates, of course), how much excess baggage would cost me per kg?

Or, even better, what other options might be open to me. I imagine I'll be 20-30kg over the limit.

Thanks in advance,

 <--- that emoticon is great

Mark

I will tell you a piece of advise.

your luggage is limited- because its not Freight!

you are better off mailing the few items to the USA if you must or

sending Via freight service. for every bag that is over

70 lbs. some airlines reduce it I think to 50lbs

expect to pay an addional 75.00- 150.00 and higher. I forgot to add

that PER bag. because, there is an agent on the other end that has to

lift each bag. thats why.

I'm moving tomorrow from France to te US.

I sent 12 boxes through a moving company tthat charges me 3euros/kg + a 170euros fee, it coast me 620euros for 140kg + 10euros for the volume.

I'll take the 2 suitcases allowed on board and voila!

You should search for some moving companies that are cheaper than airlines, most of them don't chrage per kg anymore but by piece of luggage and it's around 110/130euros i found the number of this company in a Franco-US magazine.

As well as JetBlue.

OP, you might want to look at what the cost of transportation is between JFK & LGA vs. checking your bags on a different carrier from JFK. Factor in the airfare differences as well as the hassle of changing airports.

Also, the drive isn't that bad, can your SO drive up to get you?
