Abortion foe plans Obama challenge

An outspoken anti-abortion activist says he wants to unseat President Barack Obama next year — and he wants to do it via the nearly impossible path of a Democratic primary challenge.

Randall Terry, who founded the group Operation Rescue and has been arrested numerous times for his aggressive approach to opposing abortion rights, plans to announce a primary challenge against Obama on Thursday outside the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington.

Besting a sitting Democratic president from far off his right flank is exceedingly unlikely. In an interview with POLITICO, Terry was blunt about being an underdog and said his main goals are to bloody up Obama politically and draw more attention to the abortion fight.

“We’re going to cause a crisis of conscience for America,” Terry said. “I will raise millions of dollars and run ads showing aborted babies.” Terry predicted his candidacy, which was first reported by Sunshine State News, will draw financial support from across the political spectrum because “the thrill of beating Obama up in a Democratic primary is going to be too much to resist.”

Making clear the kind of rhetoric he intends to employ, Terry lambasted “child-killing” and referred to the current administration as “Obama’s socialist plantation. He’s the master, we’re the slave labor force.”

While more than a dozen Republicans are mulling presidential bids, Obama is not expected to face a serious primary challenge before he faces the eventual GOP nominee. Terry, who has sought elected office as a Republican twice before, said he’s running as a Democrat solely because “I want to pummel Obama politically. I don’t want to quarrel with Sarah Palin and Mike Huckabee.”

Terry is best known as a founder of Operation Rescue, which has often blocked the entrances to abortion clinics and was a fierce critic of George Tiller, the Kansas abortion doctor who was killed in 2009. Operation Rescue disavowed any connection to Terry last year in the wake of statements that seemed to support Tiller’s murder; soon after Tiller’s assassination, Terry said the killing “has the potential to propel us more quickly to our goal.”

He was also a spokesman for Terry Schiavo’s parents when Washington Republicans joined the cause to keep her alive on a feeding tube as her husband petitioned to have it removed.

Terry previously lost Republican primary contests — once for a U.S. House seat in New York and later for a state Senate seat in Florida.

Terry won't be the first to find out the hard way the "Party Tradition" (applies to both parties) of choosing eligible incumbent over challengers (even when the incumbent is lost-cause as was the case of Carter in 1980). Edited January 19, 2011 by Saddle Bronc

Primaries not even begun and Obama already a one termer. I am not aware of even a short shot challenger from the R's but bless your optimism!
