Fitness standards do matter when the difference in standards affects the lives of others. I'm not so concerned with their potential for promotion, but if someone (anyone) gets to take advantage of a lower fitness standard and that lower standard puts the lives of those he or she serves with (or members of the public) at risk, then I have a problem with that lower standard.

Women run marathons, but the times vary between men and women because they are built differently. Regardless a physically fit woman can do more than most men.

So I ask again. If you have a problem with women in the military taking part in combat do you likewise have a similar issues with women firefighters or police officers?

Why would the standard be the same if men have a physiological advantage over women generally?

Because the jobs are the same? Either they can do the same job, with the same physical requirements, or they cannot. If the test is not gender biased, then you have individuals competing against individuals, not women only competing against other women.

By the way, UPS has the same physical requirements for their drivers, whether they are men, or women.

Not knowing anything about what it takes to serve in the military, I can't say what my issues are. All I'm saying (and I am sure you do not disagree) is that if the different standards impact the readiness of the unit, then those differences ought to be re-examined. I have no idea, for example, how a woman 'straggling' during a 'pt run' (whatever that is) affects her ability to serve. I will let those who know what it takes answer that.

There are many ifs, yes. However I doubt the armchair donut boys who served 10-20 years ago have much of a clue about physical fitness

i'd be willing to bet they have a better clue than those who've never served.

And, you would be wrong. I am over fifty, and a little softer in the middle, but I could train a unit again tomorrow, if the need arose.

Sure, today we have a "kinder gentler" military but once upon a time this wasn't always the same.

Wonder how the Dept of Defense would have responded then to using women in combat?
