can I change my SSN and driver's license to my married name even if my conditional green card is on my maiden name?

Hello guys, I'm new here.

I wish I've been here before I started my visa procedures so i would have been better guided as to what I need to do.

Unfortunately, i didn't apply with my married name on my AOS or adjustment of Status. Hence, now my conditional green card is under my maiden name.

Many of my friends told me that I must change my name to my married name now since I'm already married.

So I'm thinking of changing my SSN name to my married name as well as my Driver's License (DL).

However, I have a lot of concerns before doing this.

Currently my passport is in my maiden name and everything such as my health insurance, bank account, EAD etc.

I'm afraid that changing my last name to my married name in all my IDs would cause problems with my Green Card and passport (in my maiden name).

I've read in many websites including USCIS that once you change your name or any information , you must update this immediately through I-90 to replace your GC.

I don't want to do this since it has a very costly fee plus it takes 5-6 months to have your new GC under your married name. However, the USCIS agent told me that I don't necessarily need to change my GC even if i change my SSN and DL which I'm not confident about.

My husband and I are planning to simply wait until I remove my conditions through I-751 before I'll do a name change on my green card and all my IDS such as SSN and DL etc. Is this the best thing I can do or can i change my SSN and DL without the need to change my GC? Please help.

hi guys,

hope you can enlighten me on this. I just got my conditional green card last year dated 11/23/2010. It is in my maiden name.

Can I change my SSN and driver's license to my married name even if my conditional green card is on my maiden name?

USCIS agent on customer service phone told me its fine to change my SSN and DL to married name and it wont affect my GC or create conflicts etc but I'm not confident about it.

Anyone who can share their thoughts? Please. thanks.

Not unless you like to spend $450 to file an I-90, many in this situation simply wait for removal of conditions.

hi YuAndDan,

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate it.

yes, I guess my husband and I have no choice but to wait for removal of conditions to change my last name.

It's too expensive to spend the fees for I-90, can't do it.

Can I change my SSN and Driver's license to my new married name though even if my conditional Green Card is on my maiden name?

Or will I need to wait until I do my I-751 removal of conditions?

You don't HAVE to change your name at all. If you want to keep your maiden name that's your business.

However, if you want to change your name then yes, waiting for ROC is the best option, that way you don't need to pay for a replacement card and it gives you a chance to start changing other stuff in the meantime (if you want to) or at least finding out how to change them and saving the money to do it (changing my passport was expensive).

You can change name on all things if you like, DL, and SSN can be married name and Green-card and passport in maiden name.

In our case my wife's Passport is still maiden name, even though all other things are married name. When booking international travel we use maiden (Passport Name)

hi Vanessa & Tony,

Thanks for your reply.

This forum is surely a great help since my brain had been bugging me with all these confusions.

I'd wait for ROC for GC name change and head on changing my US ids etc.

Thanks for sharing about your passport, changing mine is a tedious process (based on calling our embassy here in US).

It's another issue I need to do once i got my ROC approved.

Thanks a lot :)

As has been mentioned before, you do not have to change your last name EVER. You can do it at the ROC phase or you can wait until you apply for US citizenship, if you are planning to do that. My wife is keeping her maiden name until then as she has a new passport in her maiden name and she wants her GC in her maiden name for traveling. That way the passport and GC match and there are no issues about which name to put on the airline ticket and having to carry proof of the name change--i.e marriage certificate. I see no problem with changing your name on all other documents and having the GC and passport in your maiden name or just your passport in your maiden name. I would not pay the I-90 fee to change your name, but wait until the AOS or citizenship phase to complete the name change.

Good luck with the rest of your journey.

Dave
