Who pays for all that?

The same good folks who pay for all of the carnage resulting from gun fire, we all do.

Really? Any gun enthusiasts care to enlighten the rest of us on how long it takes to retrieve your handgun, load, aim and fire? Somewhat under a day I would guess.

I do understand what you are saying though, that it would take you that long to finalize your decision. But you see, that only applies to you. All of us are different in that regard. I hope that I and my loved ones could never become that desperate and despondent. Suicide is such a permanent solution to what is usually only a temporary problem! :(

How long does it take to down a handful of pills? Jump off a bridge. The kid had problems that were not addressed. He committed suicide. Trying to make something political of his suicide is disgusting. Revolting actually. You may as well try to eliminate our right to free speech because some troubled kid committed suicide over text-bullying.

Japan ahs a far higher suicide rate and a virtual ban on handguns. The two things are not related.

Would you be suggesting that suicide rates might be more complex than simply how many guns are available. I await in hope for the day when you'll similarly admit that there's more to crime rates and law and order.

Yes indeed Japan does indeed have a high suicide rate. Yes they don't have handguns. However, the US does have guns - but would you be surprised to learn that guns are the most common method of suicide?

Gary, if you had a friend or family member experiencing depression to the point of considering suicide would you leave them with guns and ammunition readily available? Of course not! This is what we are talking about! And if he lived on a bridge maybe you would have him move elsewhere for a while! If he had potentially lethal pills handy you would likewise try to secure those. These are not just hypothetical situations. Many people have experienced the death of a friend or family member by suicide. I have seen two people in my life die this way, both by gun. If guns had not been so readily available maybe someone could have intervened before they took that last fatal step. In the US, guns and suicide are related!

So without guns they wouldn't commit suicide? that is asinine. Are you somhow pleased that the much higher rate of suicide in Japan is not committed with guns? The types of arguments that have to be resorted to would cause most thinking people to abandon their untenable position.

You sound as silly as someone who thinks gays will become straight if we don't let them marry.

I would choose Vermont over and over as a place to raise my children. Despite everyone having guns and being able to carry loaded guns concealed without a license, the number of driveby shootings in the last decade...-0-. Children killed in drug and gang violence...-0-.

I would be most pleased to admit that gun laws have nothing to do with suicide.

A troubled youth killed himself yesterday in Vermont. I am sure he was not the only one in the country. Some used guns to do it. To think that a gun law would somehow stop someone that is willing to kill themself is preposterous. "Oh I better not shoot myself in the head...it is against the law! I guess I will take Mom's tranquilizers instead"

Would you leave them alone at all? People who are believed to be suicide risks are institutionalized, they take away their shoelaces! Someone wasn't paying attention to this young man and that is a tradgedy for him and the family. The highest suicide rate in the US occurs in prisons and they have pretty stringent laws against guns.

Guns and suicide are not related. Depression is a CAUSE of suicide. Guns are not. Eating too much is a CAUSE of getting fat. Spoons are not the CAUSE of getting fat. Address the CAUSE.

Your assumption is asinine. Why do you think more people in the US choose the gun rather than the rope, knife, pills or hosepipe to the car exhaust? No reason? Because it's fashionable?

As to the reasons, yes they are complex. Human social behaviours are complex, even the aberrent ones. I admit that. You however seem to believe that the gun is the sole magic reason that there is no crime in Vermont. That is clearly BS, yet you stick to it regardless.

Actually gary, i'd be more interested to know why mass murderers like the Virginia tech guy, the columbine killers and the guy who shot Gabrielle Gifford chose the gun rather than the stick to commit their crimes.

Presumably they picked the gun for no reason, certainly not because it enabled their success.

My quotey thingy didn't work right but I'm LMFAOing at Gary's post about prisons being strict on guns yet having high suicides! HA!

"It's the shoelaces! Shoelaces cause suicide!"

As Americans, we're lazy, yet quite efficient!

About 1/2 of suicides are by gun. 1/2. While it may be the prefered method, it's far from the only way folks do it. Why aren't you calling for a ban on those other things as well? (Or are you going after those once you get guns banned?)

When folks use the letter "u" in words that don't need it, it's more complex.

Because it's hard to shoot people with a stick?
