MONTPELIER — The three members of Vermont’s congressional delegation stood with Gov. Peter Shumlin Tuesday and pledged to do their best to remove federal obstacles obstructing speedy and dramatic health care reform in the state.

Sens. Patrick Leahy, D-VT and Bernie Sanders, I-VT, and Rep. Peter Welch, D-VT, said they were already working the halls of Congress to muster support for a bill that would give Vermont and other states more flexibility in achieving the goals of the new federal health care law beginning in 2014 rather than waiting until 2017 to be allowed to experiment.

The date change would make it easier for Shumlin to accomplish his goal of moving Vermont toward a singlepayer health care system without wasting three years operating alternatives before the state could request a waiver.

Tuesday’s show of political unity for health reform set the stage for the unveiling today of three health care reform options, developed by Dr. William Hsiao, an economist and expert on health system chage at the Harvard University School of Public Health.

...

Sanders suggested the bigger battle would likely occur in Vermont. "There is no question in my mind the Vermont Legislature is going to see an assault from the insurance industry," he said. "There will be enormous pressure on the governor and Legislature not to go forward."

They will pull it off and it will work. After Obama's travesty of a pork-ulent health care bill is de-funded or repealed, Y'all can copy what Vermont does. We already have government healthcare but it is not single payer. It is very important though that we continue to allow Canadians to come on a cash and carry basis. They are very important to our access to healthcare here. There is NO WAY we could support the healthcare facilities we have without a lot of Canadians coming and supporting it.

While Sanders and Leahy do not agree with me on gun control, I know both those guys and I know they do a good job for Vermont. I don't know Peter Welch. He is a comparative lightweight.

Start with letting your citizens be armed, reduces emergency room visits by crime victims.

You're right. Leahy sure doesn't agree with you.

Some say the shooting shows the need for stronger gun control laws, but Leahy said he doesn't expect to see much change. He said Vermont has one of the lowest crime rates in the country without imposing strict gun laws.

"But I would not want Vermont laws to be in an urban area," he said.

Not every thread has to be about guns, you know.

Camden, New Jersey (one of the most dangerous cities in North America) is gutting their police department, laying off a ton of cops. There are a few major hospitals in the city center and it would be a really interesting experiment to watch (from the distant safety of my central jersey suburb) if someone simply gave guns away to all the people who live there. One per adult with free lessons on safety and technique. Would the hospitals be overwhelmed or would their ERs become so empty that the hospitals end up shutting down?

But seeing how the libruls won't let us experiment with Americans in an American city, maybe we can conduct this experiment in Iraq. Or Guantanamo!

I think we should let Gary be in charge of that experiment.

But somewhere in Vermont.

If we are to pursue the Collective route, then this is the way to go about it.... Each state, on it's own.

out of this will evolve the more efficient models for other states to copy or adapt.

If they were trained properly there should be no visits to the hospital... straight to the morgue!

Each state, on it's own.

Last time I read the constitution I'm pretty sure this is what it said we were supposed to be doing anyway.
