You get a standing ovation from me.

A lovely and applicable quote from the movie "V for Vendetta"... "The people shouldn't be afraid of their government. The government should be afraid of its people."

Agree with the quote. Not with the adaptation - "V" worked better as a graphic novel, and the premise (abandoned by the film-makers) is entirely different.

I have no experienced the novel, but I will say the message in "V" the movie has its own merit. We seem to have forgotten that the government is of the people, by the people and for the people... not the other way around. And yes, I'm one of those individuals who believes "the vote" is a sham. Sorry for my cynicism, but this immigration process has worn my patriotism to the bone.

V is quite clever for a Hollywood action flick, though that is due in a large part to the source material than the film-makers. I'm inclined to agree with Alan Moore's criticism of the movie - that the adaptation of "V" essentially abandoned what made it a quintessentially English narrative in favour of a rose tinted Bush era parable.

Not to mention it presents the worrying idea that violence is necessary to get what you want. In other words... that terrorism is justifiable.

I bought the DVD, and in the making of feature, the director talks about the first draft by the Wachowski bros. which was more true to the graphic novel, wasn't translating well as a screenplay. I have no problem with filmakers taking artistic license with the screenplay adaptations - if they are doing so with a purpose beyond just catering to the audience.

I took that aspect more to mean it often times remains questionable just who the real "terrorists" are. ... And hollywood "license" has a way of messing up a wonderful work of writing. It's to be expected I guess. Even hollywood has its agendas.

The graphic novel involves one of the characters doing LSD as a way of "putting the pieces together". It also makes V a much more ambiguous figure - as opposed to Zorro in a Guy Fawlkes mask.

Great post Dean

Especially....

I am supposed to believe it is safe to board an airplane with a hold

full of uninspected cargo as long as no passengers are in possession of

baby formula, that a group of men in Britain were about to take down

ten airliners without tickets or passports, that seven men in Miami were

going to blow up buildings in cities they didn't have the money to get

to, that one lone guy in New York was going to take down the Brooklyn

Bridge with a blow-torch, that if we leave Iraq every terrorist in the

world is going to come to the US and fight us in the malls and the

supermarkets,

I understand it's "freedom of expression"...and that's fine by me...I just find it amusing that someone who believes negative things about the US government, so strongly (to the point of "expressing it" on a message board), would want their partner coming to a place where they so strongly hate the government....to go to so much trouble to get your partner into a place where you don't like the government...odd....
