Hi,

I have been living here in the US for 4 yrs and have an unconditional green card, my husband and I have decided to separate and I am returning to England soon. What if anything should I do with my green card? can I/should I surrender it as I leave the country? I don't want there to be any issues if I or my daughter ever return for a visit in the future.

Thanks in advance.

If you are giving up your residency, then you can turn in the card to the US consulate after you arrive back in the UK

It is better to wait for some time in US, ger US Citizenship..then u will ger Dual Citizenship of US and UK both...u can then live in UK...well..people r waiting for years and decades to get GC...u hav it...so why waste this opportunity....in future u can travel back to US easily....rather than giving or surrendering ur GC...

Dont surrender it....

As to question about why I don't get citizenship before I leave, that was never going to happen anyway, if I ever return it will be for vacations, and visa waiver covers any future travels. I came here to be with my husband, now I have no other reason to be living here, all my family, friends and work are in the UK.

If "I' ever return . . . "I" came . . . "I" have no other reason . . .

Have you ever thought beyond "I?"

- What if, they give you trouble as a VWP traveler?

- What if you get married again and your husband would love to live in the US for a while?

- What if you'll have a child who would cut off one of her arms for the opportunity to move to the US?

If it were legal, you could sell your US citizenship for about $50,000 to $100,000, easily. That's what it is worth to somebody else. But for you, your future husband and your future children and grandchildren it can become priceless. What if the U.K. and some future US President get into a p*ssing match and the U.K. will no longer be a VWP country, 20 years from now. What if?

You are free to do as you please; however reading several times a week heart-wrenching stories from young fellas from the U.K. who are desperate to move to the U.K., I find your POV narrow-minded and short-sighted.

Suum quique.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

WOW. Actually if I hadn't been thinking beyond I as you put it I would have left years ago...but you know nothing about that as you know nothing about me or my situation.

Why would 'they' give me trouble traveling on VW for a holiday if I have done everything correctly by handing in my greencard and filling in the correct forms (which is why I posting here in the first place)?

As for future people who come into my life who may just die if they didn't get to live in the US...not everybody has a hankering to leave their country and way of life for America you know.

I have read a few times you spouting off about getting citizenship and 'selling' it....not sure what you are going on about there.

As for a projected pissing match between the pres the premier and no longer being able to travel on VW.....oh well guess I'll go on holiday elsewhere 'shrug'

Finally, you may find my "POV narrow-minded and short-sighted." but I'm actually seeing very clearly thank you very much.

Obviously you love it here and America has been good to you otherwise you spout this kind of ####### whenever someone makes a post about leaving....maybe you didn't read my post well enough where I said all my family, friends and work are in the UK, why on earth would I stay here?

I did not marry my husband for an opportunity to live in America or to give anyone else the opportunity to live here off my back....

My thanks to those who actually answered the question I asked, it was very helpful....I am leaving next week so will sort the form out as soon as I can :)

Well put!

#######? How can you "sell citizenship"? Are you promoting immigration fraud? I wouldn't be surprised since you were illegal yourself.

And for the record, if my marriage broke down, I would be on a plane to the UK without any plan of returning to the US, and I don't know why any future family members would resent me for not giving them an easy ticket to live there.

Mazra,

you joined VJ just 48 hours ago, so I realize that you can't possibly know any of my posts at all.

Reading your response, I must have come over as an extremely in-polite person. And indeed, I am usually getting right to the point without dressing it up in niceties, and not everybody appreciates this. Hence, let me apologize to you for that.

I've also come to realize that we are all different in the way we feel and think, and it's just wrong to assume that just I love this country more than any other country, everybody else must feel the same. Far from it!

Suggesting to anybody that becoming a US citizen if eligible is a smart decision is wrong as well, and I do realize that now too. Obviously, becoming a US citizen is more than paying a fee and passing a test; it's about pledging one's allegiance to the United States and that has to be taken seriously. I always felt like an American and the day I become one was second in importance only to the day I married my wife. The US have been my home for almost 2 decades, but apparently your home is still the United Kingdom and there's nothing wrong with that. You didn't come to the US because you love this country; you came to the US because you loved your husband, and if the US would take the course of Atlantis and disappeared to the bottom of the ocean, you couldn't care less.

So, once again, my apology to you for upsetting you. I wish you the best for the future in the United Kingdom, and a pleasant journey home to Merry olde England.

May God save the Queen!

One post violating TOS removed. As the OP has received the information she requested and as JustBob has apologized for his inappropriate and inconsiderate post, I am closing this thread to prevent further disruptive discussion. Good luck to you, Mazra.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
