Fiance Visa for a Mexican

I just joined this website and am curious to hear from people who have applied for a F-1 Visa for their fiance in Mexico. I would love to hear some success stories as I am feeling quite hopeless. I haven't started the process yet because I don't know much about it. Any tips? How long has it taken some people? Are other Countries faster than others? Has anyone considered doing something different other than a F-1??

Did you mean a K-1 (rather than F-1) visa?

Someone correct me if i'm wrong, but wouldn't you be filing a K-1(fiance visa) instead of F-1 (Student visa)?

Hahaha!!! You'll be dropping lots of F-bombs by the time this is over.... :P

Our K-1 visa has been in the works for almost 5 months now. Really soon we should receive our NOA2 and then it looks like about another month until the interview. Sometimes it's quicker than 6 months and often it's longer.

I'm not going to sugar coat it, it feels like a long and stressfull process but it's the only way to legally live together in the U.S. so it's what we have to do. I suggest you look at the resources here like the K-1 flowchart http://www.visajourney.com/content/k1flow

this will show you all the steps you will be going through.

Also looking at Igor's List and the timelines can be a little confusing at first but you can look at people's profiles and timelines and filter the results to show just Mexico, K-1s and the service center you will go through to see people in the exact same process.

http://www.visajourney.com/timeline/filterlist.php

Read the posts and ask questions and you will get a better idea if this is the visa for you.

MIENTRAS: Save all your evidence!!! If you go this route you will need all the proof of your relationship you can find so keep those plane and bus tickets, ATM receipts, hotel receipts, take photos if you're still together, anything and EVERYTHING and you can go through it and toss some later if you need to.

I'd be happy to answer any questions you have along the way. I wouldn't have been able to do it without the support from many people here.

Buen suerte...

Thanks so much for writing back. I have been trying to figure out what the best thing to do is for us and have gotten so many different answers. Have you seen each other while your visa has been in process?? My fiance just came to visit me for a month and left last week and it's so hard to be away. I just recently moved back to the States, I lived in Mexico for almost 4 years but needed to move back because I hated my job! Will you have your interview in Juarez? Do you both have to go??? I have so many questions, but i have to go back to work haha!!! Seriously, thank you for writing back.

Well in OUR case I am lucky enough to be 8 months pregnant and unemployed, living off of my savings in the meantime... So I was able to be with my fiance in Mexico up until just recently. Unfortunately his income in Mexico isn't high enough to meet the requirements to be able to travel here on a tourist visa so we are really crossing our fingers that our visa will come through in these next couple weeks so he can be here for the birth in mid February.

It is REALLY hard to be away from him during this time, especially frustrating for me is having the government being the ones to keep us apart, NOT our own doing. But looking forward is what keeps us going right now.

As far as the interview goes I think there is a consolate on DF that some people can go to still (maybe just chilangos) but in general everyone will be sent to Juarez. And no, you DON'T have to be there for the interview but you can be in town for support. You will not be allowed into the consolate either so the day of the interview you will probably be pacing the halls of the hotel! But because of the wait time to get the approval (up to a week) many loved ones choose to spend that time together and then be able to cross together! You can read reviews about the interview process here http://www.visajourney.com/reviews/index.php?cnty=Mexico&cty=&dfilter=5

A lot of couples do not see eachother through this whole process and everything can be done from the separate countries with teamwork, the internet, and DHL. If you DO decide to file the K-1 there are a lot of really good resources on this site to help you through the process.

So to filter the timelines first go to the link at the top for timelines, then under timeline functions go to timeline search aqnd it will pull up the filters for search criteria. Enter what you know: visa type (K-1), service center (west coast CSC or east coast VSC), beneficiary country (that's your fiance in Mexico) and embassy (Juarez). I usually filter further by going below and putting in 2010 under the start date for NOA1 so I don't get anything older.

Hope that all makes sense!

You're the best!! Thank you for writing back. Congratulations on the pregnancy, you must be so anxious for your fiance to come. Do you know if you are having a boy or a girl? Where did you live in Mexico? I was just there for almost 4 years in Cancun where my fiance is from. I'm sure I said that already haha. I need to make the decision soon on how we are to proceed with this whole thing. Did you ever look at other options besides the K-1? I have an acquaintance in Chicago that is from MX and her husband from Chicago. They married in Mexico, came back to the US right away and didn't claim they were married until 2 months later. Then she got her green card 5 months later. I wish I could do it that way =/ I guess it's too much of a risk. My fiance just left here last week. Is it allowed for him to come visit me during the process? How long has it been since you have seen yours? I'm sorry about all the questions, I am so curious about so many things. You are such a big help. Gracias por toda tu ayuda!

Nicole,

The visa journey is an expensive, time consuming, and patience trying process. There is, however, hope for every one of us. You can find this hope through the fellow VJ members who have successfully completed the process and are now sharing a life with their loved ones in the USA. Be prepared to wait many months for a response from USCIS, it will be quite difficult to deal with the uncertainty. I do think people from certain countries have an easier time at the consulate just for being from a particular country (think 1st world countries). Whereas beneficiaries from other areas in the world may need to provide more proof and work much harder to convince consular authorities of the true nature of the relationship. Gather lots of evidence and keep the faith!

August 23, 2010 - I-129 F package sent via USPS priority mail with delivery confirmation.

August 30, 2010 - Per Department of Homeland Security (DHS) e-mail, petition received and routed to California Service Center for processing. Check cashed. I-797C Notice of Action by mail (NOA 1) - Received date 08/25/2010. Notice date 08/27/2010.

After 150 days of imposed anxious patience...

January 24, 2011 - Per USCIS website, petition approved and notice mailed.

January 31, 2011 - Approval receipt notice (NOA 2) received by mail. Called NVC, given Santo Domingo case number, and informed that petition was sent same day to consulate.

Called Visa Specialist at the Department of State every day for a case update. Informed of interview date on February, 16 2011. Informed that packet was mailed to fiance on February, 15 2011.

February 21, 2011 - Fiance has not yet received packet. Called 1-877-804-5402 (Visa Information Center of the United States Embassy) to request a duplicate packet in person pick-up at the US consulate in Santo Domingo. Packet can be picked-up by fiance on 02/28.

March 1, 2011 - Medical exam completed at Consultorios de Visa in Santo Domingo.

March 9, 2011 at 6 AM - Interview, approved!

March 18, 2011 - POE together. JFK and O'Hare airports. Legal wedding: May 16, 2011.

Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.
