Question about filing taxes

I'm getting ready to file my taxes this year. I married my wife in Vietnam earlier this year. We are still in the process of getting her a CR-1 Visa.

For my taxes I was going to choose married filing separately. In order to do this I needed to provide her social security number or tax ID.

She's still in Vietnam and doesn't even have her visa yet. What should I do? Do I need to apply for social security number on her behalf?

I'm confused by this. Hope somebody can help here

File for an ITIN number using W-7 to use in place of SSN.
