For those of you doing the legal part first and the "wedding" later, has anyone gotten any flack from naysayers? I have gotten a few people who say I am commiting fraud if I get legally married and do not consider it my wedding. It is not like I am going to hide the fact from anyone, although I probably will not go out of my way to tell people outside of close friends and family. For me, even though we will be legally married, it will not feel real until our religious ceremony when we say vows in front of all our family and friends. I do not think it is fair to let the government control when and how I chose to do my wedding, or how doing the two events separately ccould be construed as fraud. Thoughts?

Wedding date: July 23, 2011

Why that date?: There is a large Ferris wheel in Yokohama named Cosmo Clock 21. It has 60 passenger cars, each corresponding to a minute. It's also the word's largest clock! We were waiting in line for more than half an hour to ride it and I asked if she could guess which seat number we would get. Her guess was exact, so we knew 23 was a special number for us. July came about since my birthday is on July and it will be easier for me to remember our anniversary in the future if its close to my birthday. :P

My Fiance didn't like the idea at first. He was/is concerned that we'll feel fully married after the legal marriage, and the celebratory wedding many months later will feel less "real" and important. Basically that we'll miss out on the full wedding experience by cutting it in half.

I think we may very well feel fully married after signing the paperwork, but the other will still feel rich and meaningful in its own way.

If you haven't already, you should check out the the blog A Practical Wedding. They talk about all kinds of ceremonies on there and have a really great attitude about making your wedding be what you and your partner need it to be.

I say if you're getting flack, stop bringing it up. It's nobody's business but your own.

Wedding date(s): Oct. 22/11 or Dec. 21/11 or Dec. 31/11

Why: A year since we met or since he officially proposed or when I got my ring (really depends on when paperwork is done)

Where: Virgina (his home state) or Washington (our intended home state) or Hawaii (the state where we met)

I-129f Sent: Jan. 8/11

We've decided on a courthouse ceremony if we're in Virginia and then a wedding with friends and family whe we get to Washington. Hawaii would happen only if he's back working there. No concrete plans yet.

The sooner the better for us... life is too short and we're getting too old not to be with the one we love.

Wedding Date: August 14th, 2011

Why: It seemed like a secure date, that he would definitely be here by then, and originally I was going to be starting grad school in September so August seemed good. I wanted a summer wedding because I wanted the ceremony outside and the reception inside.

Filed: Sept. 27, 2011

Now we will probably do what others have said, and go immediately to the courthouse and get married but still have our big wedding ceremony and party in August.

I also bought my dress ages ago, and it's sitting sadly in my closet waiting to be used!

Looove this thread!

Wedding date: October 29, 2011

Why that date?: I wanted a summer wedding, but wanted more time for the I-129 F, but fall is fine, this was the only date in October the church I went to when I was young was available.

129-F Send: November 2010

Positive that you're going to make that date with these service centers going so slow: Dear God, let's hope so! :D

It really depends on the K1 process and if he gets here in time..we may do the JOP before our actual wedding ceremony..As for it not being the "real wedding".we won't even exchange vows or rings or anything, we just would consider it to be red tape for the government and not even consider ourselves married (well socially, on paper legally we would be obviously). I've told a few people CLOSE to me; the practical reasons involved, like you can't even turn in the paperwork for adjustment of status/work and stuff until you are married. To people in your life who would think that it is lying or "fraud"..Just because we have found our true love that happens to live in another country does NOT mean that we should be denied whatever type of wedding we feel is appropriate. My fiance knows people who did the JOP then ceremony and were still super excited regarding the ceremony. We will consider the ceremony after JOP our "real wedding". Sheesh I hate naysayers!!

We are planning to go down to the courthouse and sign the legal papers for our marriage ASAP once my FI´s visa is approved and he enters into the US. It is too stressful to plan a real wedding when we do not know for sure if we will even be able to make the date, and since we will have family and friends traveling from all over, we want to give them lots of notice, and not just plan something on the fly once the visa gets approved. Plus, FI does not like the idea of having a big wedding while not employed.

Our "Wedding Wedding" is scheduled for June 9, 2012! Is anyone else doing this? legal ceremony first, religious ceremony and reception at a later date!

Yes, we are doing the same. We are actually planning an American wedding and a Romanian one, because it would be really hard for all my relatives and friends to fly to the States or the other way around. So we will plan a real wedding later on. We wanna have time to finally enjoy ourselves and have some time just the two of us, no relatives, no friends, just us two - we will need it after all this time apart. There is time for everything :)

I don't think that not having a religious ceremony and/or a reception the same date when u go to the courthouse to sign the papers is a fraud. Matt and I decided that we are going to have a reception when we will feel ready. A wedding means spending money - no matter if it's big or small. And we are already spending lots of money on the K1 visa - as u all already know. I think getting married at the courthouse first and then having the religious ceremony later on is perfectly fine. All that matters is that you are with the one you love.
