Hello all!

My Colombian girlfriend and i are getting married shortly and will right after be applying through DCF in Bogotá, Colombia for a CR1 visa for her (I am a US citizen). We have everything lined up, and I think I am top of all the documents.

The complicating factor is this: when I met her she was in the process of applying for a residency visa in Canada, Quebec to be specific. She started this process over two years ago, and as a fluent french speaker this has been a dream of hers. Now, the visa has come through and she is getting it put in her passport in the next couple of weeks (before the DCF filing). Will this cause a major problem in getting approval for a CR1? She wants to go to Canada temporarily but then the plan is obviously to live with me in the US. There's no trickery involved, just a really hard decision for her - but she is clear on the desire to live with me in the states.

A side note, it is my understanding that she has 6 months from the issuance of the visa to enter the US. Is this correct? And it is also my understanding that with a CR1 visa she can leave the US for up to 6 months at a time without putting her residency at risk? (or better put: she can leave one time for a few months without putting her residency at risk).

thanks much,

dt

Sorry if that wasn't clear. We both currently live in Colombia. I have seen 6 months as the time from when the visa is issued until she has to enter the country.

My main question though is whether having a resident visa for Canada in her passport (recently issued) will be a major negative for obtaining the US visa.

thanks,

dt

I think the best thing for you to do is to check with the consulate in Colombia directly. Each country/consulate has their own rules, etc. Usually, having visas to different countries should not affect the chances of getting the US resident visa, but since it is another resident visa, that might look strange to them. I would give them a call or e-mail and ask. Here is the contact us page for the consulate in Bogota: http://bogota.usembassy.gov/contact-us.html
