Help! The Social Security People Won't give us a SSN on K1 Fiance Visa

My fiance has been here three weeks, we went into the Columbia, MD office to get his SSN. We followed everything explained here. We filled out the SS-5, left #5 blank just in case. Finally got called after waiting forever and the lady was quite rude-asking for his work authorization documents. We said he was here on a K1 fiance visa. She said 1. we needed to be married, 2. he needed work saying they wanted him to work and 3. We needed Dept of Homeland Security papers. I tried to explain that was not correct and could we speak to someone else. She said for me to leave as I wasn't the one trying to get a SSN, and that if I was an expert I could go create one for him.

HELP-what do we do, what is the proper way, can we go to another office??

Thanks!

Some people have trouble, some don't. Just read the guide here on how to get one.

http://www.visajourney.com/content/ssn

As long as the I-94 is valid you can get one.

K1 Visa Process -> 12/09-06/10 Married -> 09/10/10 AOS Process -> 09/10-12/10 Removal of Conditions-> 09/12-07/13

U.S. Naturalization -> 7/8/20

Print out the documents as suggested on SSN guide here... the one that MrTee12 sent you the link to above and march right back into the same office, hand them to that lady and tell her she that until she knows her job, she shouldn't be so rude to the people who pay her salary.

Person obviously doesn't know what they are talking about.

Try one of these offices:

SOCIAL SECURITY

SUITE 1A

337 HOSPITAL DR

GLEN BURNIE, MD 21061

Take Rt 100 to Oakwood rd exit turn right on Oakwood rd another right on Hospital Dr. Office in small strip shopping center on left.

SOCIAL SECURITY

SUITE C

3431 BENSON AVE

BALTIMORE, MD 21227

Take Rt 100 to I-95 to Baltimore Take Caton Ave exit Left on Benson Ave. Office on the left maybe a 1/4 mile

You can be at either office in 20 minutes from Columbia if you don't go during rush hour.

Thanks guys-we'll try again-I had all this information-but the woman would have nothing to do with us-saying it was her job and then didn't let me near to question her or ask for a manager.

Will try-thanks for your help!!!!

Wish us luck,

Mari

A friend had the same problem with her husband getting his DL (he came on a K1). The guy was very rude and gave them a hard time. They called their attorney and explained what had happened, in turn their attorney called the DMV and straightened them out.

Some people are very prejudice to outsiders and may not be the first time it will happen. I would call and ask to speak to a supervisor if the problem arises again or before returning to that SS office. Or as suggested, avoid the problem all together and go to another office. Best regards.

I had a similar experience when I applied for my SSN. I went in and tried to apply for under my new married name. I brought my marriage license and identification. They said that since my 1-94 did not hold my married name, I could not get a SSN since the names did not match up. So I left, and came back the next day and spoke to a different person and applied again under my maiden name. I did not bring up the fact that was married or anything like that. Loo 5 minutes and they gave me my receipt that said my SSN would arrive in the mail in 2 weeks.

Once I get my passport changed to my married name, I'm just going to go in get my name changed on my SSN to my married name.

I would definitely suggest going to another office, and apply under your maiden name if that's easier. Then get it changed afterward. It's not difficult to get it changed.

My passport (my only photo identification) hold my maiden name, so that's the name I can go under.

  • 2 weeks later...

I just went to the Columbia office too and the lady started spewing some nonsense about needing an EAD. She didn't even look at the system, just started talking about seeing his K-1 visa. Save yourself the headache and go straight to the Glen Burnie office. The associate over there took our information, no questions, and just started entering my fiance's information in the system.

I just can't believe how 2 offices of the same agency can act so differently. Ridiculous!
